Faux Leather Style Arc Ziggi Jacket
Well, when I saw this Minerva faux leather fabric, I knew just what it had to be…. A Style Arc Ziggi Jacket. This faux leather is just so perfect for the Ziggi and the hand of this faux leather is amazing. It comes in sixteen colors and I used the color blush. I do feel the blush has more of a soft lavender look in person but whatever shade of blush, it is beautiful and I love it.
This is my first true experience making a garment for faux leather and I did some reading and research on this fabric. Some of the things I learned and used
I used a leather needle
Pattern weights for cutting out the pattern
No pins or if I did use pins then inside the seam allowance only
I did use clips to hold the seams while sewing and sometimes I used clear tape to hold zippers in place
I lengthened my stitch for topstitching
Test your pressing, if using a press cloth, you can use an iron and press as you go
Take your time, practice on extra fabric
Teflon or non-stick foot
I did invest in Erica Bunker’s video class on sewing this jacket and I cannot recommend it enough. This is a big project with so many zippers and extra steps, with Erica’s help it is like she is holding your hand along the way. I watched the entire video before starting and then used the video again for each step.
One thing I would recommend is to have all your supplies on hand. You will need four zippers for the pockets and sleeves and one separating zipper for the front. A special note the pattern recommends six inch zippers on the pattern cover but the pattern instructions use five inch. I went with six and changed the markings on my pattern. I am not sure my hand would have gone in a five inch opening on the pocket. Minerva has a nice selection of zippers
I enjoyed the quilting process on the sleeves and yoke, this technique adds so much texture and dimension to the project plus that ready-to-wear element. The collar has snaps and I only set my snaps on the collar, it just made me nervous to attach to the jacket itself.
As per Erica’s instructions, I added a gusset to the sleeve zipper opening, talk about a classy finish to the sleeve. I would have not thought of this without Erica’s class. I am in awe of my jacket, I hope that doesn’t sound too much, but I am. I wear it and think I cannot believe I made this! This faux leather jacket is the best thing I think I have ever made.
Back to the leather, this Minerva faux fabric has such a nice hand, a bit of weight and thickness, making it so easy to sew. I am impressed how it holds the shape of the jacket but isn’t too stiff. You will love sewing a garment from this fabric.
Which color is your favorite? You can’t go wrong with this blush color. I know this faux leather Ziggi Jacket will be in high rotation for me.
