Lately I have been on a georgette kick. It's an ALMOST sheer fabric with a texture similar to crepe and such a beautiful drape. It makes the most gorgeous blouses.
Combine a beautiful gorgeous drape with an elegant black and white stripe and it becomes a vision in my head that is a must-have for my wardrobe.
Some may compare georgette to chiffon, which may make you cringe. Chiffon is slippery and dances entirely too much while you're trying to line up the raveling edges right before it gets to the sewing machine needle. Georgette has a slightly better mannerism. Meaning, it behaves just a bit better. It varies in how sheer it is, but due to its crepe like texture, it's nowhere near as slippery as chiffon, which makes sewing with it not as challenging. However, one day, not so long ago, I did learn the hard way that when cutting, you want to make sure that the fabric is not pulling and shifting under your pattern weights or with your pins. I ended up with uneven pieces for every pattern piece. Not that I normally cut everything perfectly, but this was lesson learned kind of situation.
I decided to pull out my McCalls 6436 for this blouse. I purchased it a few years ago when a lady told me that it was her favorite blouse and it will be mine too. Okay....challenge accepted! I have to try a few other blouse patterns before I can make a final decision but I have to say, it's definitely a contender. The only changes made to the pattern were the addition of the splits on the sides, and the cuffs were made without the split and buttons.
I am growing much more comfortable in making blouses now. I spent years of my sewing life avoiding blouses because I feared making button holes. But thank God for automated button hole functions on sewing machines. Now that I've gained the courage to use the function, I will be cranking out more blouses for my wardrobe. And knowing that Minerva's fabrics are such amazing quality fabrics, I will be ordering more of their georgette fabrics to support my mission.
