When I saw this stretch velvet animal print fabric my mind immediately went to one of my favorite patterns- Simplicity #1072.

It is a great pattern with elastic waist trousers, a pencil skirt and a cute raglan top. I love these trousers because they are actually really flattering, not frumpy like most elastic waist ones tend to be. The skirt is simple and can be made in about 30 minutes. I originally bought this pattern because of the raglan shirt. I loved the front contrast on it and have seen a lot of other sewists do some cute things with it. However, the trouser pattern ended up being the pattern I used most. It is my go-to pattern when I need some trousers real fast. I know they will fit perfectly every time and the only modification I make is adding pockets. Some simple slash pockets to make them absolutely perfect.

This fabric isn’t heavy. It’s actually a very nice mid weight so I just cut the pocket bag out of the velvet. Something I didn’t consider when adding the pockets, was the velvet and it’s clinging potential. It's kind of fiddly to put my hand in my pocket and then pull it out. The whole pocket comes out with it. A better alternative for the pocket would have been a silky fabric or a slinky knit fabric. A fabric with some stretch and slip would have been more ideal.

While sewing with this fabric, I found that the edges rolled on the cross grain. Using my serger to finish edges helped to keep them from rolling as much. I would highly recommend to do that as well. Finishing the edges isn’t necessary with stretch fabrics like this but it makes it so much easier to work with when you do.
