Part One

It’s a tale of two halves on today’s Minerva Make!
A year into having a cat and I thought it was about time I joined the crazy cat lady committee with some epic digital printed fabric. This is the multi-cat digital print polyester fabric that is just pure madness with these scarf wearing kitties all over it.

I’m not usually a polyester fan so I was cautious about this one however it actually feels really nice and it very easy to sew with. As the fabric is printed, the reserve side is white so I’d recommend a sharp needle to avoid snags and pulls that may show through on the printed side. (Ask me how I know that hehe).

I had really wanted to try The Avid Seamstress – The Blouse pattern for a while after seeing some lovely versions online and though this would be a great time to try that out.
I struggled a little to find my correct sizing on this one as I fell between a Size 5, 6 and 7. I checked the finished garment measurements and they also seemed to vary but Size 6 seemed to be the best match and I went with that as according to the chart it had enough ease for but and waist and I could just flare it out a bit for my hip.

As soon as I traced the pieces, I became a little concerned as the armscye seemed really high compared to patterns I had previously seen. However, I trusted the measurements and went ahead to make the shirt.

The shirt itself sews up beautifully. There are no darts and simply 2 front pieces, 1 back piece and 2 sleeves plus a small collar. It all came together incredibly quickly because of that! The button placket is formed by simply folding the front shirt edge inwards.

I usually swerve set in sleeves like the plague, but I was being good and had a go. Surprisingly they went ok as there was not actually a lot to gather at the sleeve head. Phew.
My favourite feature of this blouse is the elasticated ¾ sleeves. I don’t know why I haven’t done this before as I am forever pushing my sleeves up my arms anyway, so this was a brilliant little touch. I will definitely be trying that feature out on different shirt patterns! (Also saves doing sleeve plackets right!)

Now the reason you are seeing these pictures on my mannequin and not me is because…. It just doesn’t fit ☹ I couldn’t even pretend to wear it I would have ripped it in half! Zero goals for this make unfortunately.

Unfortunately, I think I am a bit too broad and muscular for this particular pattern as the back was very tight and I found the armscye so small that it cut into my skin. The sleeves were also way too tight on me, and I felt like the incredible hulk busting out of a shirt. Now this could easily be rectified with a broad back adjustment and a few tweaks to the pattern, and I appreciate very little fits right out of the pack. Even though it didn’t fit me, I do really like the design and versions on other people. The instruction booklet and photo tutorials are also wonderful!
