Hi friends, I’m back with a review on this gorgeous Art Gallery cotton. It’s such a bright and fun fair print which reminds me or Merry-Go-Rounds and festivals. I had just over a metre to play with so I paired it with some canvas I had lying around to add stability and endurance to this dress weight fabric. I’ve made this with quilting cotton for my husband before and it’s still going strong so I didn’t have to worry this time around that my hard work would go to waste!

Lets talk more about this print! It’s from the Tallinn range by Jessica Swift playing with folk inspired motifs. I love these horses and initially sold them to my child as unicorns, but they’re just horses… pretty horses so I was forgiven! I love the vibrant vibe of the “Zirkusbau Candy” colourway which is a beautiful turquoise blue with pink, beige and dark grey giving a vibrant but soft look. It also comes in another colourway called “Zirkusbau Primary” which gives a very different feel! Much more subdued but beautiful nonetheless with a pale blue background with burgundy, red and grey tones. Much more suited for the colder climes to come!

I chose to make the Marigold Backpack from Violette Field Threads PDF Patterns. I tested this one for them a while back and in hindsight I’m not sure how I completed it in a week! Most of it came together really easily but the part that got me was when it came to construction of the actual bag. The corners are so tight, even with hand tacks I struggled to feed this rigid construction through my sewing machine. I think next time I would actually save time by hand sewing that bit! I lost count of how many times I had to unpick the corners! Maybe this is where those wickedly curved upholstery needles might come in handy? I had quite a few finger pricks from using just a standard small sewing needle!

I chose to leave the top gusset free of interfacing because I figured there was enough support from the front, back and bottom being stabilised with bag foam. I didn’t want the little one carrying around a box like structure! Along with the canvas lining there was more than enough stability going.

I bought a fuchsia pink and a rainbow webbing from Minerva – no idea why I offered the kid a choice, of course she chose the rainbow option! Initially I wasn’t so keen but it turned out really cool! I chose black sliders in the ends instead of the Merchant & Mills Buckles I ordered because the black looked more child friendly! The plus side to this was that I didn’t need metal rectangle rings which I forgot to buy; the negative was that I always forget I have to reverse the webbing attachment instructions! So an hour or so later of unpicking I was back on track! For the record, when using black sliders on the Marigold, the LONG webbing attaches to the Triangle support whilst the short piece of webbing attaches to the shoulder straps holding the slider in place. If I ever make another – which I will because the eldest now wants one, I can refer back to here to remind myself!

I love how this backpack came out, it’s not my tidiest sewing but I think it’ll stand up to the everyday stresses of a primary schooler! I think my favourite part are the side pockets – no more leaky bottles! Hurrah! The little one stole the bag halfway through me trying to photograph it, she’s been waiting so patiently for me to be done. It’s rather sweet really!

Until next time where I will be sharing my experience with 7m of Rainbow organza!
