COSMIC COSMOS
Well here I am again with another black sweater. Pushing the boundaries, as ever, with my second Sew House Seven Cosmos Sweatshirt (the first, in a lovely green fleece-back sweatshirting is posted below, scroll down to see).
The green sweater gets a lot of wear, particularly in the past couple of weeks as temps have dropped, so I was keen to make another wardrobe workhorse to accompany it. Looking for something more subdued, this black cotton terry ticked the box. It's a great terry - with all the attributes you'd expect - easy to wash, stable to sew and robust to press.
I ordered some black ribbing for the neckband and got to work. This is a great simple pattern to sew. My overlocker, not so keen on chunkier knits, ploughed through this make with gleeful abandon. Not a wave in sight and sewn up in under an hour.
I took a little longer over the neckband to make sure it was even all the way round - I've had too many messed up necklines to even think about taking the risk of leaping straight to overlocking. These days, I usually baste on my sewing machine and then finish on the overlocker once I'm sure everything is in place.
I'd say this is a pretty good safety strategy too, because you can sew (slowly!) over fine pins on your machine to ensure the stretch is even, but not risk hitting a pin on the overlocker because you can use the machine stitching as your guide. If ever you have hit a pin on your overlocker you will know it is a terrifying and dangerous experience! Don't risk it!
This sweater will go with everything, and is the sort of thing you could dress up or down - as handy for a Sunday on the sofa as it is for a work day Teams meeting. I am tempted to make more of these jumpers as I tend to live in them and, when it gets really cold, sometimes wear them underneath my chunkier Toaster sweaters. Layering is definitely going to be the way to go this winter so I feel it will be time well spent sewing as many layers as possible.
Are you sewing for the cooler months? I'm always up for suggestions!
