Sewing gloves
Hot on the heels of my recent necktie for the
#sewnwithvogue challenge, here's my second foray into Vogue patterns this month - my new beloved winter gloves, courtesy of the wonderfully simple-yet-mindblowing pattern Vogue 8311.
One look at the cover of this pattern and you're transported back to the golden heyday of what I like to call 'fancy gloves'. I have a few pairs of vintage gloves - view B in particular reminded me of one pair boasting an elegant long satinette sleeve with tiny faux mother of pearl buttons stitched along the outer seam. These gloves don't get an airing for two reasons: one, I'm not hugely fancy and - more crucially - two, these gloves are just not long enough in the finger department.
It's a shame, really, as my hands are narrow enough to squeeze into ye olde gloves, but my fingers much longer than they ought to be and, therefore, finding gloves that fit has been a complete impossibility as far back as I can remember. I have just made do with whatever I can find. Given my many years behind the machine, it's funny it never occurred to me to solve the issue in the way I solve every other clothing misfit - by making my own.
Cue the
#sewnwithvogue challenge and my aforementioned (see previous post on V9073) love of Vogue accessories patterns. This pattern, which comes with a whopping nine variations, scratched the itch for appropriately fitting glove fingers in the most splendid way.
What's even better is that I started out making a wearable toile in some fabric scraps and have wound up with a pair of gloves which a) fit beautifully and b) I will happily wear to shreds.
I went for the simplest design, View A, dispensing with the decorative finish for a clean-lined simple pair. This quilted-look jersey is an excellent choice for this pattern because it is warm and fairly thick but not to the point of being tricky to sew. It's also very stable and sews neatly with a small stitch. If you're looking to make something warm for winter, I'd recommend using this or perhaps a ponte or even a stretch velour or fleeced back jersey. The best bit is these can be chucked in the washing machine when they get a bit grubby.
I'm so happy with these I'm keen to make more pairs as soon as I have a few moments and the headspace to sew those fiddly finger gussets once again.
So, do you ever struggle to find gloves that fit? Let me know if you are joining in with the
#SewnWithVogue challenge!
