Fully Embracing the Jumpsuit
Behold my second jumpsuit of the year! I made a Zadie earlier in the year and it was, in my opinion, the “bees knees” and turned out to be something I reached for so often. Given that I was so hesitant to make a jumpsuit in the first place, that’s a pretty big wardrobe win in my estimation!
I bought the Amy jumpsuit pattern from Closet Core Patterns, probably around the same time I bought the Zadie (ie: over a year before I ever sewed it up!). I loved the look of it and one of the local sewists had sewn one up for our one “Frocktails” event we had in our community over two years ago and I thought it was fantastic on her. Last summer I had really wanted to make an Amy but chickened out because a jumpsuit seemed kind of a frightening prospect for numerous reasons. Fitting, style, going to the loo… So instead of making an Amy I chose to make a faux jumpsuit that would have the same look of the Amy using a Crystal Cove Cami and the Samara Pants patterns from Itch to Stitch. I wore it all the time and got lots of compliments on it every time, so between that and the fact I loved wearing my Zadie so much I decided to take the plunge and fully embrace the jumpsuit and finally make my Amy this year.
When Minerva sent me this gorgeous linen look fabric I knew it was going to be awesome for the Amy. It’s lightweight and swishy, making it perfect for those flowy wide legs, but still had enough structure that the shoulder straps should be fine and not sag out at all wearing it. It’s got almost a gauzy, slight crinkle look to it too, which I though would be great for obscuring any wrinkles when I’m too rushed to run an iron over my outfit before dashing out the door to work and also make it an outfit that would work from morning to night camouflaging any of wrinkles that would plague a regular linen fabric just with wear. I adore this fabric so much!
Sewing it was easy. It didn’t shift about much, although I did use pins a bit more than I usually do, just for extra insurance. I did find it a bit hard to cut out, but I think that was more the combination of my dining room table and the fabric and not enough weights used, because I cut out a second project in another colourway of the fabric and had no problems. I used the floor (OH MY KNEES. OUCH!) and lots of pattern weights. I sound fancy calling them pattern weights. In reality I just use a bunch of flat, large washers from the hardware store… Point being I think the difficulties I had with cutting out my Amy could be down to “user error” more than the fault of the fabric.
So time for full disclosure. I started sewing my lightweight, swishy Amy towards the end of summer. It was meant to be one of my last sneaky late summer projects. We had some bizarrely warm weather into the fall, which I could easily have worn it too. But alas. Life conspired against me. I went back to work (I’m a school librarian) and quite frankly my machine saw no love from me for the first bit of the fall. Then once I got my bearings I ended up with a horrendous jaw infection and swollen face so didn’t finish up because all I could do was sleep and feel miserable. Then I lost my nerve. How? Why? Amy is not a difficult pattern. All I had left was to sew in the zip and finish up and yet there it sat. Languishing in a sad heap on my sewing table. Then, well… Procrastination. Which brings me to photographing what should have been a glorious summer outfit in December. On the bright side, I’m done and I love it! It’s as wonderful as I’d imagined and feels great on. I’m so happy with it. I’ve seen a lot of posts on Instagram of sewists finding ways to stretch their summer outfits into colder weather outfits, so I’ve been thinking about how I could do that. Maybe layered over a sleek top (I’m thinking a Nikko top by True Bias)? Or with tights and boots with a cardi? I saw a photo of an Amy once styled with a gorgeous wrap top in the style of the Sew Over It Ella, maybe in a crepe back satin? I’ll have to peruse Minerva to see what shiny fabric catches my eye! I’ll figure it out and if I don’t? Well, no worries! I’m ahead of the game and I have a great new jumpsuit ready to go as soon as the weather warms up again! Win win!
