Jump, Jump, Jump(Suit) for Joy
Guess what!?!?! I "jumped" into one of my most recent makes for Minerva and I am so darn happy with it! I think I may well be one of the last few sewists on earth to have experienced the amazingness that is the Zadie Jumpsuit. It seems like just about everyone has made at least one of them.
To be honest, I was a bit skeptical. I bought the pattern late in the spring of 2019 when everyone was suddenly posting their Zadies online, but couldn't quite decide if a) I was the jumpsuit sort and b) if it would actually suit me. So I hummed and hawed on it and then spring turned to summer and I was all about my faux jumpsuit and then summer turned to fall and by that point I kind of figured knowing my luck, the jumpsuit craze would fade and I'd be too late to the party anyway.
However, when I had the opportunity to try out this gorgeous linen blend print from Minerva, I thought maybe it was time. After all, when opportunity knocks, who am I to ignore it? Jumpsuit mania appears to be alive and well if my social media feed is any sort of judge. Me Made May this year saw more Zadies than I could imagine, so it felt like the time was right.
I was still skeptical though. I don't really trust statements like "It suits everyone." Really? Every single one? I don't know... I mean, it looked like it did in the photos I was seeing, but you and I both know you can easily photograph things at their best angles and that don't show the ghastly fit problems, so how accurate was the claim?
Time to find out. Sewing it up was pretty straightforward. I had no complaints with the instructions at all and other than fiddly bias tape, it's really very simple sewing. The fabric was beautiful to work with; soft and drapey, but not slippery thanks to the linen and it feels amazing to wear.
I didn't do muslin - sometimes I like to live on the edge apparently. After a year of reading reviews, Instagram posts and blogs, I chose to size down, and then I also took three inches off the hem, because I absolutely love a cropped pant for summer. I did some quick measuring of pattern pieces to get a rough idea of what I needed to do and just went full steam ahead based off of that.
I knew I needed to add length to the bodice, and I'd likely need to take a small wedge out of the center back for a sway back. So I did those adjustments and sewed it up. What I didn't take into consideration is the fact that when one adds to the top, one must take away from the bottom in order for things to not become comically saggy, baggy in the bottom region. It felt like the crotch seam was hanging halfway down to my knees. I'm sure it wasn't that bad, but I pinned everything up to test out how much I needed to take off the waist of the pants and one inch less felt much, much better.
So my seam ripper and I got to work removing the bodice and I trimmed an inch from the top of the pants, then realigned everything and sewed it back together and tried it on again. Definitely much better! So I finished it off and then the time had come to put it to a true test. I put my jumpsuit on and then I sat, stood, crouched, lounged, walked, stretched, jumped and pretty much everything else I could think of that I might do whilst wearing it on a normal day and then I stayed in it the rest of the day.
I'm sold on the Zadie jumpsuit. I've even already altered my pattern to reduce that crotch seam properly so that I can sew it up again and not lose an inch of pocket space to an improper method of alteration. (Good thing those pockets are roomy!!)
I’ve worn my Zadie so much over the late summer and fall – I even had my school photo taken in it this year I love it so much! I was definitely sad to put it away when we suddenly had snow and cold hit us in October, but then last week when the sun came out and it felt like early fall again with temps in the high teens (Celsius that is) I decided to pull it out of the closet and have one last kick at the “cropped pants, lightweight linen” can. Of course luck of the draw, the forecast was wrong, the wind was biting and I nearly froze walking between the school and the classes that are out in the portable huts, but other than being somewhat chilled to the bone every now and again, I was so comfortable in my Zadie. It really is an amazing garment and I can’t wait for spring or the next unseasonably warm spell to pull it back out again!
Sadly this beautiful linen blend print appears to be sold out now, but I noticed there's several other linen blends that are absolutely gorgeous for Zadies! I just searched linen blend and came up with so many choices! (hmmmmm... maybe I need to pick out for another Zadie...) I'm particularly enamoured with C8308-Navy and PH-5649...
Until next time, happy crafting!
