Fleecy Cardigans I Choose You!
Its good to be here again with another project! I totally shifted gears this time with my project and made something for my two youngest kiddos instead of sewing for myself. I used to sew for them all the time when they were little. “Mama Made” was where it was at in our house! Everything from diapers to jeans, pjs to play tents and everything in between. It's been ages since I've sewn much more than the annual pair of Christmas jammies for them though, so I felt it was about time.
Since I was going to be sewing for them, I decided to let them take the reins with the design. They chose the pattern they wanted and once that had been determined they both, being Pokémon obsessed right now, decided that they absolutely needed a heat transfer vinyl design of a Pokémon medal for embellishment.
I know nothing about Pokémon despite having it in my house since the late nineties when it first was a big deal with my now two adult boys. My students at school tell me about it all the time too. Now the little guys are into it and have binders full of cards, books, games and talk about it incessantly. And yet? I still don't really have a clue. So when they started talking about medals and what not, I handed it over to them.
They created their designs using my Silhouette Cameo, taking a lightening bolt and leaf that I already had in my library and adding the circles. They sent their designs to cut and did the weeding of the vinyl themselves. At which point they completely abandoned me to go outside and play Pokémon, leaving me to iron the vinyl on the fabric all by myself.
For the pattern they, of course, didn't want any of the patterns I already had for them, so it was off to peruse the Internet. They ended up choosing the Elijah Tween Cardigan from Create Kids Couture, which is a simple buttoned cardigan that features patch pockets and a V-neck. My co-collaborators did not want buttons, thank you very much. Their cardigans needed snaps. Truth be told, my feelings were not hurt over the declaration of no buttons. No fussing with temperamental buttonholes, no sewing on buttons... snaps are just so easy. I still have a huge collection of them left over from my aforementioned diaper making days so I always have lots at hand in a myriad of colours to choose from. Of course my guys chose plain old black.
I made the size 12 for both of them, which seems a bit crazy given they're very different body types from each other, but I've found that Douglas, who's eleven, just needs some extra length for his long lanky torso and arms and Thomas, who's ten, needs the width of a 12 and then I just take out a bit of the length to fit his broad shouldered, football, defensive player physique.
The pattern went together quickly and easily. It's a no brainer, fast sew. What makes it so special and the reason the boys stood over my shoulder as I sewed asking "Is it ready yet, Mom?" and "Are you almost finished yet, Mom?" is the fabric! The fleece sweat shirting fabric that Minerva sent is so cozy and warm. They couldn't wait to be snuggly warm in their cardigans. I really love the depth of the colour. It's washed and dried well and not lost any of its rich hue.
They were not very happy with me when I told them that they weren't actually allowed to wear their new cardigans until we had taken photos for the blog. Oh the moaning and groaning that ensued. On the other hand, when the sun was finally out the other day and I suggested we go take photos, they didn't hesitate to throw their rubber boots on and head outside, happy to finally be able to wear them.
It was a really fun project to work on! I loved collaborating with them and letting them choose what they wanted. They really enjoyed the process too. I know they're going to get lots of wear out of their cardigans, especially because they had a hand in making them! I really should make more things for them I guess... but I think next it's my turn again. I have some gorgeous fabric from Minerva calling my name, so that's going to take priority.
Until next time, thanks for reading and happy crafting!
