Let me tell you, trying to stay on top of fashion trends during pregnancy and breastfeeding days is hard, or at least I found it so. Power to you if you had the energy to look glamorous. During this time, I prioritized getting myself dressed in something clean and functional over looking trendy, and swapped reading magazines to frantically googling anything there is to know about a baby. And you know what? I wouldn't change it for the world!
I seriously feel like I woke up one day and everyone is wearing loose fitting jumpsuits and culottes. I mean, I vaguely recall seeing people in them a couple of years ago, but now? They have taken over the world! Finally, I plucked up the courage to jump on the bandwagon and make a pair of culottes, despite thinking that I would never be able to pull it off.

And the result?

I absolutely LOVE them!

They are seriously comfortable. Like, I don't want to ever take them off! Suddenly, I understood their appeal and popularity.

The pattern I used was McCalls 7133, one of the happy mails that I received as part of the #patternswap2019. This was exactly what I needed to kick me out of my comfort zone and try something new. Although the pattern envelope did not look that enticing to me, I liked the princess seam in the back of the leg, and all the tissue fitting tips that the instructions included.

I paired them with a little cropped top. This was actually the "hospital gown" that got a mention in my previous post, my first version of the Lisette Butterick 6182. As much as I enjoyed wearing it in my 3rd trimester, I just couldn't see myself wearing it as a dress now. I know that I will get much more wear out of it as an upcycled cropped top.

I cut a size 8 based on my measurements rather than my usual 6. I also measured the facing pieces, and decided that a size 8 would be best. However, I ended up needing to take in at all of the seams slightly, to achieve the not falling off but room for a 3-course meal sort of fit. I also shortened to the petite length at the crotch to waist section, and lengthened the hem by 2cm so that I get the a particular length that I was after.

The back princess seams were one of the features that drew me to the pattern, and they make fitting so easy.

If you ask me, my version looks better than the pattern envelope ;)

Last but not least, we must talk about the fabric. You probably know about my soft spot for chambray fabrics by now, and my endless obsession with floral prints. Combining the two, how could I say no to this amazing Floral Chambray Fabric? The flowers are the perfect scale for the culottes, and the fabric sews and drapes beautifully. It is super comfy next to the skin, and swings with the breeze.

I totally see the appeal of culottes now. Comfortable, practical, yet easily dressed up or down, what's not to like? I think I'll be wearing them all the time now!

Thanks for reading. Alice from Queen of Darts.
