Storrs London Tiered Lucerne Dress
I am back with one of my absolute favorite garments that I have ever made. In fact, I think it IS my favorite thing I’ve ever made. The combination of fabric and pattern are a match made in heaven!
This dress is a hack on the Lucerne blouse from Hey June patterns. I made it in the most amazing Egyptian cotton lawn from Storrs London. The fabric is a tight weave, lightweight cotton with a soft, smooth hand. It is such high-quality fabric and feels very luxurious. There is quite an array of different prints available so it was a bit of a challenge for me to settle on one fabric, but in the end, this multicolored paisley print won out.
I knew that the fabric deserved to be made into something showstopping, and a tiered midi dress seemed like just the thing. I decided to use the Lucerne blouse as my base because I love the fit and the cute sleeve tie detail. I modified the neckline a bit and cut it as a round shape with a slit that buttons at the neck.
I cut my usual size 10 through the bust and tapered down one size at the waist. Since I was making a dress, I shortened the bodice so that it would hit at my natural waist. I curved the waist seam up a bit toward the side seams so that it would hang straight when worn.
When I cut the skirt, I cut 3 tiers. Each is 1.5x wider than the next. I cut the first at 11.5” long by 34” wide cut in two pieces, which was 1.5x the waist measurement of my bodice. My second tier is 12.5” long by 51” wide, also cut in two pieces. My third tier is 14” long by 76” wide, which I had to cut in 3 pieces because of the width of the fabric.
I used a nice, deep 2” hem allowance for the skirt. I just love using a wide hem on extra-luxe fabrics. It feels a little bit indulgent and special to me to have a deep hem allowance. My other, very necessary, modification was to add pockets! I used in-seam pockets that are anchored into the front waistband so that they will stay toward the front of the dress. One of my biggest pet peeves is pockets that flap around from front to back. Anchoring them into the waistband seam is my secret weapon for perfect pockets!
This cotton lawn was a joy to work with. It was easy to cut and sew and it holds a perfect press. It is opaque and drapes nicely. The colors are so vibrant! I could not stop staring at it when it came in the mail.
It is true love for me and this dress. I have worn it every chance I get and it’s a great dress for swishing around the house. I feel so fabulous when I wear it! The fabric feels looks and feels amazing, and it is so comfortable. I would love to sew with a different Storrs London print in the future!
