I’ve been keeping my eye on the Sequoia cargos pattern for a while now and when I received the suiting fabric from Minerva, I knew at once for what I wanted to use it for. There was no question! I think this stretch suiting fabric is perfect for the cargos (my affiliate link:
https://itch-to-stitch.com/product/sequoia-cargos-shorts-digital-sewing-pattern-pdf/?affiliates=undukas ). I do recommend to make a muslin from similar type and stretch fabric before you get to the good fabric! And as the pattern says in the fabric requirements that if you use a fabric with stretch, you should go down a size.
I loved sewing this polyester and viscose suiting fabric. It’s soft, smooth and easy to sew. It doesn't unravel easily and if you give enough heat and steam you can press it too. It doesn't wrinkle almost at all. I really like the color too – it's just dark enough not to show small stains. The fabric has both vertical and horizontal stretch – so it’s so comfortable to wear and move in. As I plan to use my cargos mostly for walking and hiking, it was a definite requirement.
Sequoia cargo pants have 6 pockets (if you decide to make them all) and four of them have pocket flaps. Each pocket with a flap has two snaps on them. I think of myself as a professional snap installer now, I ruined none and every one them is in the correct place.
I have made several Itch to Stitch patterns before and I knew that I need a knock knee adjustment on straight leg patterns. So, I slashed the pattern on the knee point, moved the lower part toward the inseam for about 1.5 cm and drew a new line from the crotch to the hem. You can Google the adjustment and find several different options for that. I’m not totally happy with the end result, there are still some lines on the back of my thighs, but it’s a lot better than it would have been before. I’m actually really happy that I had time and a great fabric to try these things out and get new knowledge about fitting for me and I now have a pair of cargo pants to wear.
I really like Sequoia's waistband – it has the upper part made from ribbing (with the elastic inside) and lower part made from the main fabric. It closes with snaps on the front. I used different ones from the pocket snaps as I wanted to make sure these stay closed even if I bend or climb.
I took the photos of my Sequoia’s with my brand new Gothenburg top (also by Itch to Stitch, my affiliate link:
https://itch-to-stitch.com/product/gothenburg-top-digital-sewing-pattern-pdf/?affiliates=undukas ). I used wool blend knit fabric that is just a tiny bit rough on my skin (have a small bite is how I used to complain about this kind of fabrics to my mum), but when I wear a camisole underneath, it doesn't bother me at all. I love the combination with my pants.
I’ll be back soon with new items!
