Hi again!

I’m all excited to show you my wonderful old rose-pink coat. I can’t wait for warmer weather to wear it and style it into different outfits. I used quilted textured knit fabric to make it and it’s a great addition to my wardrobe.

I have fond memories with this color – I used to have a heavy knit sweater in this color and my mum always told me that it’s exactly my color. She died 9 years ago, but whenever I see this color, I’m reminded of her saying it and I feel myself better and warmed in heart. Funny how some small things keep staying with you...

So, when Minerva offered this quilted knit fabric, I knew I wanted to make some kind of a coat or jacket and I jumped the opportunity. The rose side of the fabric has quilted effect, it’s soft and warm. The wrong side of the fabric is simply black knit. It's similar to ponte fabrics, but it is much softer and drape is actually really good. This quilted knit fabric is also a bit bouncy and it’s better to topstitch all the seams that need to lay flat. I topstitched the back seam, side seams, shoulder seams and I topstitched the front and back facings. I did topstitch the collar as well – I like how topstitching adds some lines to the design.

The pattern I used for making this coat, is in reality a pattern for boiled wool. Boiled wool usually has no stretch, is stiff and heavier than this textured knit fabric with 30% stretch. I traced the pattern from Ottobre Design 5/2020 magazine (coat number 9) and I made a muslin. It was way too large and so I sized down. I knew that using a pattern like this for knits can be tricky, but this time it all worked out great. I interfaced all the the facings and added a bias cut satin binding for finishing the edges. All the seams are done with straight stitch first and then overlocked. After that all the topstitching.

The collar and the front look brilliant – it’s high enough to keep neck warm and have interesting lines. I’m so happy that the quilted knit fabric worked with me and I achieved this look.

My rose coat harmonizes with my textured crepe knit dress. I believe I’ll wear these two together a lot in spring and summer evenings. I have a bit of this fabric left and I plan to make a cardigan. I need to find a matching fabric first, as there’s not enough to cut out the full garment. I’ll show it as soon it’s ready.

Sewing this knit fabric coat was a totally new experience for me. I’ve had a lot of those this year and I’ve become much better sewist. I feel a bit proud of myself 😊

Happy sewing!
