Have you seen those long maxi dresses with floral pattern? The ones that have gathered panels and flow around while moving? The ones that look really feminine and delicate? I’ve seen them. For many years I planned to sew one for the summer. Somehow, I never got to work on one and until recently, I thought it’s not actually my style. Boy, was I wrong...

When I opened the Minerva package and found this gorgeous and soft John Kaldor viscose challis fabric inside, I just wanted to pet it. It has such beautiful and vibrant colors, splendid floral pattern and wonderful drape. It works excellently with gathers. It’s translucent – it doesn’t show everything you have under, but when the light hits you from the back, one could see your leg contours. My dress has so many gathers and so much fabric, that I don’t feel like it’s translucent at all. I’m smitten with the colors of this fabric – I was a bit afraid, that these aren’t suitable for me, but these are perfect!

The tiered dress pattern is from Ottobre Design 2/2014 magazine. I lined the upper part with white cotton fabric. The dress has so cute design, wide enough shoulder straps and its width isn’t too wide – I can easily take a faster and longer step in it without getting tangled. It wasn’t too hard to sew a zipper in the side seam, both fabrics acted nicely.

I paired my dress with this cute bolero - I don’t like to show my upper arms too much and these together are perfect combination. I used Itch to Stitch Aveiro cardigan and bolero pattern (my affiliate link: https://itch-to-stitch.com/product/aveiro-cardigan-digital-sewing-pattern-pdf/?affiliates=undukas). This pattern has so many good things – you can make a long cardigan (or a duster, as I’ve seen them called), short or classic length ones and then there’s the bolero option. I made ¾ sleeves as I only had 1 m of this pretty blue textured knit fabric. I really like this texture – it makes the fabric interesting and I can still wear it with so many other garments. I’ve tagged it on this blog post too, so you can easily find it there. I’m actually thinking about ordering more of that – now, when one can order in part meters, it would be awesome to get 1.5 m of that and make a classic length Aveiro. I’d wear it in summer and winter!

When I was finished with sewing this outfit, I realized I truly enjoyed making a full outfit. I planned which shoes I would wear with this dress, which handbag (I sew these too!), where would I go. We’ll see the next summer, how these plans turn out. At least there’s always beach to go and take a walk on 😉
