Hello everyone - we’re talking pyjamas today!
I’d like to start off by talking about the fabric. I picked out this John Kaldor Paris Charmeuse Silky Satin Fabric because I loved the summery print and the unique mix of vibrant colours. Sometimes I’m drawn to things that don’t really fit into my wardrobe and this would definitely be one of these cases. As much as I loved the idea of making a cute slinky little slip dress out of it, I realize that with my lifestyle some chic pyjamas would be a better fit for me. The fabric has a beautiful drape so the possibilities here are endless for garments but the soft fluid drape does make for very comfortable pyjamas.
The pattern I chose was a mix of two Megan Neilson patterns. For the tank top I did the Reef tank and because I wanted pants instead of shorts, I used the Opal pants for the bottoms.
The Reef tank is PERFECT for sleeping in. I really can’t recommend it enough. The back ensures that the straps don’t slide off when you’re sleeping and everything stays in place. Something I didn’t even realize I cared about until I made this tank for the first time!
I chose the Opal pants because I wanted to have a nice wide leg pant with an elastic waist. I omitted the pockets because I’ve never needed pockets on my pyjamas before and I like to reduce any bulk. I also chose the
I wouldn’t call myself a pro at working with this slinky type of fabric – far from it. So I did struggle a bit with cutting my pattern pieces. What worked best for me was using a rotary cutter and a ruler – not my usual approach but it did the trick for the most part.
I used a woven interfacing were the pattern called for it in the tank to give it some stability at the top and on the straps.
I would say both of these patterns are extremely beginner friendly. You really can’t get a more basic pant that fits and looks great. I’ve done a previous post in the tapered leg and paper-bag waist version of this pattern as well so it’s really beginning to be a nice go-to for me.
In conclusion, I’d like to note that I am new to the pyjama making world and usually wore an old t-shirt to bed up until very recently. I never put much effort into pyjama’s because you don’t go out into the world wearing them so making the perfect pair really felt like a waste of time when you can make a new dress/coat/pants etc. I will admit that I was wrong in this approach. It is SUCH a treat to have me-made pyjamas that look and feel amazing. If you’re like me, you’ll definitely make every excuse to wear them outside…walk the dog, go get the mail..whatever…you’ll feel great doing it!
