The Shiniest Kielo!

When this fabric arrived, I draped it over a mannequin and instantly knew that whatever I made from it had to have some drape and movement to it. The fabric just came alive the minute that it moved about, something flat just wasn’t what was going to do this fabric justice.
This fabric has a real lightness to it which means that it moves so fluidly, and with a real freedom to it. Combine this with the slight stretch it has and it is so versatile.

I found recently that Named Clothing’s Kielo pattern has been updated and now includes the pattern for both the original dress, sleeves and a jumpsuit as well… I was too excited, I couldn’t resist it, especially because it the way the fabric drapes in Kielo was going to be perfect for this fabric. Plus the wrap front on this design is just so flattering, really pulling in the waist which is something I love in a piece of clothing. I also find it helps to disguise my slight mum tum which is always a win.

The Kielo makes up so easily. There is a back opening on the jumpsuit to enable you to put it on, it gives instructions for inserting a piece of ribbon here and attaching a button. I used a narrow piece of black elastic here with a shanked black button for a nice discreet and easy to sew option. It uses a facing to finish off the neckline and armholes (if you’re doing the sleeveless version). It calls for interfacing at the neckline and on the ties, I omitted this because of how light the fabric is. I didn’t want to create too stable an area on a fabric that is so fluid, and it still works absolutely fine without it.
I measured in at a UK20 on this pattern, this was based on my bust primarily. This pattern is a real advantage that it wraps at the waist as it means the bust and hip are the most important when picking a size as you can overlap the middle by as much or as little as you need. I often find my waist measurement doesn’t fall into the same size box as my bust and hip so that flexibility on this is great for me.

I would have loved to have made this in the sleeved version, but sadly I had not ordered enough fabric for that. I’d have only needed an extra ½ a meter, always a frustrating moment when I realise that, it’s a definite disadvantage to ordering without an idea in mind of what you’re going to make.

This fabric is thin, and when I first began looking at it had me convinced it was going to be see-through when I put it on. It’s not the blue, but the black mesh between the blue squares that appears like it’ll be see-through… and yet I am pleased to report that once made-up and I put it on I haven’t found any hint of a see-through problem.

This is one of those mad garments that makes me smile. I have absolutely no idea what occasion it’s for and yet I absolutely love it. It brings me so much joy! I love a mad fabric, and ordering something that I have no plan for and embracing the natural qualities to the fabric. I have yet to have a disaster using this method of fabric choosing, I love the creativity it brings out in me.

And for anyone looking at my pictures and thinking… what is Clim’s diner?! It’s the combined name my partner and I have always been, Clare and Tim = Clim.
