Dandelion Denim Jumpsuit

I couldn’t tell you exactly what it was about this fabric that drew me in so much… but something did. I wonder if it’s because of my children’s love of blowing dandelions, or my love of all things floral, or just that I don’t make a lot in denim and I liked that this was denim with a twist… whatever it was though, I loved it on the screen and was really pleased with the quality of it when it arrived. The denim is super soft and really comfortable to wear, perfect for a summer make for sure as it’s a lovely light weight fabric.

Simplicity 9125 is a dress and jumpsuit pattern with 2 neckline variations. I stumbled upon this pattern on the hunt for a jumpsuit and was really taken by the neckline strap/pleat detail and the cinched waist. It’s not often that I go for a wide leg, but I thought to myself I could always taper it if I really don’t get on with it… and I’m glad I pushed myself out of my comfort zone with it because actually I like the way the wide leg works with this cut and fabric.

Of course the other fabulous feature in this jumpsuit is… it has pockets! I think we can all agree, that everything is better with pockets!

The pleat at the top of the front bodice, is such a simple little detail, and yet makes the garment really flattering… and removes any need for darts or more complex shaping. The pleat then attaches to a short strap that connects to the back bodice which comes down to an overlapping V at the back. This means that there are no zips/buttons or buttonholes in this… just an elasticated waist. So, it’s a really simple make and definitely one for those of you that try and avoid more complex fastenings.

I did make one adaptation from the instructions; the channel you create to encase the elastic the instructions say to fold under to hide the raw edges. I took one look at how many layers there were and decided that it was going to be extremely bulky if I did that, so I overlocked the edge and just secured it down without the extra turn. If you don’t have an overlocker you could do this with a zigzag (being denim it does fray so the raw edges will al need finishing.

I also decided to finish the fabric belt off with an angle rather than the flat edge the instructions give. This was a really simple change and something that’s worth considering whenever you’re doing a belt/end of a strap etc, because this is just a style line so doesn’t impact upon anything else in the construction by changing it slightly. I think it gives the belt a more professional finish which I liked.

A few notes about this fabric, it is definitely one you will want to pre-wash before using. Not only did I notice the shrinkage (because I am awful at remembering to wash before I make so did this before hemming but after construction) but also because handling this dyed my hands blue! (The photo of the fabric belt doesn’t show just how blue they were) Denim often does this, it’s been so long since I last stitched with it that I’d totally forgotten… but don’t worry it didn’t take more than a couple of washes to get them back to their normal colour.

One last note for you to consider… I am 5”5 and I’ve found this to be a little on the short side for me (only by about half an inch). I am slightly longer than average between my waist and hip so found it to be (as Sewing Bee’s Esme would say) a little hungry in the bum on me… I was able to drop the crotch slightly to rectify this however after I had made it up. However, I still found it to be a little short in the leg (before the shrinkage from washing it) so I would suggest if you are any taller than me to lengthen the legs by a couple of inches to give yourself a bit more room with choosing the finished length and always with a jumpsuit check if you are also have a long torso like me to avoid being perpetually wedgied during wear. (if you are it’s a really simple alteration to add fabric to the top of the trouser pieces when you’re cutting out).
