I am back on the Minerva blog with, in my opinion, some pretty funky trousers!
Back in November 2019, I was very lucky and honoured to win the Day 5 of One Week, One Pattern, organised by Sewisfaction. Day 5 was sponsored by Named Clothing, and they offered a very lovely pdf bundle as their prize. I have to admit, I loved my dress that I posted about on day 5, but the photo was not my best… bad lighting in my dining room at the end of a very long day! I was, therefore, so surprised when I spotted myself in the Sewisfaction newsletter as a winner!! So a huge thank you goes to Sewisfaction and Named Clothing!!
As part of my bundle I picked their Tyyni cigarette trousers, which is not my usual style, but I have been trying to push myself out of my sewing comfort zone this year. I had been looking at them for a while, but because it is out of my comfort zone I never took the plunge. So a free pdf was just the excuse… The trousers are slim fit, high waisted trousers, with curved seams around the hips and waist, with in-seam pockets.
I then picked some stretch cotton twill from the Minerva website. I had my fingers crossed that it would be the right weight for the trousers, and once the fabric arrived and I felt it I just knew that these could potentially be a match made in heaven. The fabric itself is a lovely medium weight, completely opaque and had a lovely amount of stretch. Ideal for constant sitting/standing/moving around!
Based on the final garment measurements I picked a size 16. I am a pear shape, so I am always aware that I am at the higher end of the size charts when it comes to bottom half garments. The cutting out and sewing was relatively easy, but I did really struggle on the fly front. The instructions and drawings were not clear enough for me, and Named Clothing do not have any tutorials or videos on this… I watched loads of videos from other companies, but their pattern pieces were never the same so I was just getting more and more confused. Then stepped in the lovely Sharlene from SoSewDressmaking! Sharlene had previously made the Tyyni trousers, so explained where I had gone wrong and how to fix it!! So a huge thank you to her, and this is why I love this community… all sticking together and helping each other out!
First try on was a really disappointing… I was checking the fit right near the end (only the facing and hem to do), and the trousers were HUGE! With the side seam not really being on the side and the fly front being in already, I opted to take the majority of the excess out of the centre back. The crotch curve felt fine, so I just graded from two thirds down the back seam back up to the waist, taking out 2” doubled over. I then took the same amount from the facing.
Second try on, and the trousers were still big, so I opted to then take out some excess from the side seams, but could only grade over a small distance as the in-seam pockets were already in. I then made a seam in the facing as by this point I had already attached it to the trousers.
After all the alterations I think the fit doesn’t look too bad, but I still have some excess around my crotch. So I think I would call these a wearable toile… If I made these again I would definitely size down to maybe even a 12 all over, as I would rather have the slightly tighter legs as well. I would also try and alter the crotch area to reduce the bagginess there (maybe lowering the rise would help?).
I really do love a lot of the details though of this pattern… The curved seams sit nicely on my curves and (with the right fitting) would really nicely extenuate my figure. I also really really love the bottom of the trousers. It’s a really simple addition putting in a slit, but I think it nicely elevates the trousers too.
I have to say, I absolutely love the funky print of the fabric! More than I thought I would!! Before taking the photos, I had worn them on one occasion with a jumper over the top, and another time with a white blouse. So, they are definitely also really versatile.
