One of my favorite things to sew is a great transitional piece - something that works now, layers beautifully later, and extends the life of my handmade wardrobe. When Minerva invited me to sew the Style Arc Springfield Coat using their Art Acoustics Cotton Denim Twill, I couldn’t say yes fast enough. I immediately fell in love with the oversized silhouette and raglan sleeves, making it the perfect layer as we begin thinking about cooler weather.
One of the highlights of this project was Minerva’s sewing kit. Everything arrived beautifully packaged and ready to sew, including the pattern, the exact amount of fabric, coordinating thread, heavy-duty snaps, the correct sewing needle, and all the little extras needed to complete the project. It takes the guesswork out of gathering supplies and lets you get straight to sewing.
Before cutting into your fabric, I highly recommend washing and drying it first. I learned that lesson the hard way after making a denim Tracy Jacket that shrank after its first wash. Thankfully, this cotton denim twill washed beautifully and came out of the dryer just as gorgeous as when it arrived.
Although the Springfield Coat is designed as an unlined coat, it would be incredibly easy to add a lining by attaching it to the facings. The pattern also includes snaps for the cuffs if you prefer a more traditional finish, but I opted for the clean, streamlined look without the hardware.
I also love how easy this coat is to style for completely different vibes. This time, I paired it with one of my favorite co-ord sets, and I absolutely love how the royal blue pops against the coat.
Thinking about adding a versatile handmade coat to your wardrobe this season? The Springfield Coat paired with one of Minerva’s sewing kits is a wonderful place to start—I can’t wait to see your version!
