Minerva Core Range Washed Slub 100% Linen Fabric
Pattern Merchant and Mills Cassidy jumpsuit
Hello sewers
This has been a lovely sew. Cutting out, sewing and pressing the Core Range Washed Slub linen was really straightforward.
At 170 gsm this slub linen is lighter than some but still has a good body to it. It has worked perfectly for this jumpsuit and would also be just right for some wide leg summer trousers for example. There are 33 colours to chose from so deciding which colour to chose could be difficult! It’s quite a tightly woven linen so fraying was minimal although I still felt it needed overlocking to finish the seams.
I washed it at 30 degrees and found it shrunk a little so that the actual width was 136 cm Instead of 145cm. Something to bear in mind when considering how much fabric to order.
I sewed with a fine universal needle and loved how it handled and pressed. Certainly there will be creasing when I wear it but that’s the joy of linen isn’t it?
This is only the second Merchant and Mills pattern I’ve sewn and I am so impressed by the quality of the paper it’s printed on and the excellent step by step instructions. The process for making the jumpsuit was very straightforward and I’m thrilled with the end result. It feels very up to the minute and in fact I spotted a similar navy linen jumpsuit on a high end retail store website..
I looked carefully at the sizing and initially cut an 8 at the bust grading to a size 10 at the waist and hips. When I tried on before adding the elastic casing I felt there was too much room in the trousers so increased the side seams. I’ll cut a straight size 8 next time. (I’m a size 10 at M&S for context).
I wanted to add a touch of fun to this garment so I added rear pockets with a Sashiko pattern and red poppers to match the stitching. ( I used poppers in order to make taking the jumpsuit off quick!). I was really worried about messing up at this stage but they were easy to apply.
A big thank you to Minerva for this beautiful fabric.
