When I saw the Lucky Streak print in Minerva’s Print on Demand Cotton Lycra Jersey, I knew it would make a fantastic everyday dress. The rich teal base combined with the playful abstract leopard-style print feels bold but still easy to wear, and the cotton lycra jersey is soft, breathable and comfortable.

For the pattern I chose McCalls 8085 sewing pattern, a knit dress pattern with a fitted bodice and tiered skirt. I hadn't made this pattern before but I'm glad a gave it a try.

The construction of the dress is simple but I made a couple of alterations to the fit and style. Firstly, I sized down slightly to achieve a more fitted bodice, and I also made a petite bodice adjustment so the bustline would sit in the right place. I also decided to change the neckline finish by adding a neckband rather than the original facing which was just folded over and stitched in place. I think this gives a neater finish and sits better.

The original design features a two-tiered skirt, but I wanted a maxi length version, so I added an extra third tier to the bottom of the skirt. This simple hack just involved cutting a long rectangle but it gives the dress more length and movement while keeping the relaxed feel of the original design.

Construction was very quick and satisfying. I used my overlocker for most of the seams, which makes sewing with jersey fast and straightforward. The fabric handled beautifully and presses well, while the stretch gives the finished dress great comfort and wearability. There was a lot of gathering involved in making the skirt which took some time and patience and I did question my choice to add an extra tier at this stage! But I think the extra effort paid off.

The result is an easy, swishy maxi dress that pairs perfectly with trainers for everyday wear. I've also worn it to work with a pair of ankle boots and had lots of compliments. The cotton lycra jersey is so soft and comfortable to wear, it feels like secret pyjamas! And it has pockets which I think are essential in a day dress.

The fabric was gifted to me as part of the Minerva brand ambassador programme.
