Pattern Description: The Julien jacket adapts to a wide range of fabrics, from denim to faux fur and corduroy. With topstitching, it takes on the look of a classic work jacket. Without the chest pocket and featuring a corduroy collar, it transforms into an authentic “Barn jacket.” Oversized in sherpa, it becomes a cozy mid-season jacket you’ll never want to take off.

Fully lined, it has three patch pockets, a button closure, sleeves with slits and cuffs, and a boxy cut that easily accommodates your favorite sweatshirt underneath.

For an even more relaxed look or to layer over a chunky sweater, you can size up two sizes.

The pattern has been designed to be accessible: the lining construction is simplified, as is the sleeve vent, making it easier for all sewists—even beginners—to achieve a clean, professional finish.

Pattern Sizing: 32-52. I made a size 37 grading to a 39 at the hip based on the instructions to size up 2 sizes from your measurements if you want to be able to wear layers. This worked out perfectly.

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes, this jacket was surprisingly easy to sew for a lined jacket.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I like the versatility of the design and how different fabrics would result in very different jackets.

There was one part of the drafting/instructions that i did not like. The instructions for sewing the cuff to the sleeve would have resulted in the cuffs having extra length at one end--it even shows this in the sewalong. I sewed the vertical cuff seam even with the sleeve, trimmed off the extra, and then stitched the cuff to the sleeve so the edges would be flush.

Fabric Used: Minerva Core Range 225gsm Soft Washed Stripe Denim Fabric Medium Blue/Minerva Core Range Cotton Sherpa Fleece Fur Fabric White. I also used some leftover white rayon dobby for the sleeve lining.

It was a bit challenging to work with the sherpa as a lining because of the thickness and also because it has a knit backing, making it want to stretch out a bit while sewing. But I was able to make it work successfully, sometimes trimming extra fabric off if things were misaligned.

I prewashed all fabrics and then washed/dried my jacket after finishing, and there was more shrinkage in the sleeve than i was expecting. They are just a tiny bit short now.

Changes/alterations: I graded up one size for the upper back for my broad back, shortened the sleeves 3 inches (should've only done 2 because of the shrinkage).

Would you sew it again? Probably not for awhile as I do not have a need for another chore jacket but I liked the pattern enough that I would be willing to sew another at some point.

Conclusion: I wanted to add a classic stripe jacket to my wardrobe. This one turned out exactly as i had envisioned and I could not be happier with it. It's also surprisingly warm as I took these photos in 28 degree F (-2C) temps and was plenty warm layered up with a turtleneck and cashmere sweater.
