🌙 The Celestial Gemma: A Magical Maxi Dress for Spooky Season ✨
I’ve already made the original version of the Gemma Dress before, but I promised you a long, dramatic version, and here it is, just in time for Halloween magic!
The Gemma Dress (MP1028) is such a timeless pattern - a chic, skater-style design that flatters the bust and waist before flowing out into that dreamy, flared skirt. With its high mock turtleneck, contoured waistband, and romantic gathered sleeves, it’s one of those patterns that feels both elegant and wearable.
This time, I made a few changes to give it a little twist. Instead of sewing the invisible back zipper and hook-and-eye closure, I decided to leave them out completely. The fabric I used : Minerva Exclusive Celestial Cats Recycled Brushed ITY Stretch Knit in Obsidian is beautifully stretchy, so the dress slips on easily without any fastenings. The ITY has a silky drape with a soft, brushed surface, and it feels luxurious against the skin, comfortable yet refined, perfect for both everyday wear and a touch of evening glamour.
Now, let’s talk about this fabric - because it’s truly out of this world. The print features golden tigers, shimmering crystals, glowing moons, and radiant suns scattered across a deep obsidian sky. It’s celestial and mysterious, like something from a cosmic fairytale. The colours dance subtly under the light, and the overall effect feels perfectly suited to this time of year - a little witchy, a little romantic, and totally enchanting.
For my maxi version, I replaced the original knee-length skirt with a longer, flowing one. I cut two large rectangles, measuring from my waist to my ankles (plus seam allowance), and created pleats instead of gathers. Pleats give a more structured, elegant shape while allowing the print to shine uninterrupted. The finished skirt swishes beautifully as I walk , it feels graceful and dramatic, exactly what I imagined when planning this version.
The sleeves remain one of my favourite details. Their volume at the cap and wrist gives such a soft, vintage charm. In this fabric, they drape with a slight bounce, catching the light as they move. Combined with the mock neck and the mystical print, the whole look gives off a celestial-goddess-meets-autumn-evening vibe - perfect for this season of moonlit nights and cozy gatherings.
Sewing this version of the Gemma felt like the perfect project to welcome the darker evenings and the magic of late October. The combination of a classic silhouette with a fabric so rich in symbolism - tigers, moons, crystals, and stars - feels empowering and a little bit otherworldly. I can easily imagine wearing this to a Halloween dinner, a night out, or just twirling around at home with a cup of spiced tea.
The Celestial Gemma has truly become one of my favourite makes - mysterious, comfortable, and full of cosmic charm. 🌒✨
