One shiny green skirt straight from the sewing room! I thought I was going to make a sleek A line bias skirt for summer parties, simple and elegant, right? But after too many late night doom scrolls through current skirt trends, my plan kind of snowballed. Shiny materials, lace, volume, asymmetric hems are all trending, so of course I decided to add everything. Apparently, I am unable to keep things minimal.

The pattern is from a Finnish sewing book, but it is pretty much the same as Tauko Lohi. To get my version, you just need to add a ruffle piece to the seam in the middle.

Sewing satin, however, is never quite that easy. This viscose satin was so slippery that cutting straight was really difficult. If you are aiming for clean lines, I really recommend trying a gelatin bath to stabilize it first. Mine is a gathered floaty version, so precision was not critical, but I was happy to have wide seam allowances just in case. It frays a lot, so 1.5 cm or ⅝ inch is a safe bet.

For the hem I used a double fold stitch method, first fold sewn with a slightly tightened upper thread, then finishing with a second fold and topstitching. The ruffle edge is done with a rolled hem foot, which was a bit of a battle, but lace trims cover up any struggles perfectly. And the trim adds a fun detail too!
