There are loads of lovely Jean jacket patterns out there to choose from. My choice here is the Hampton Jean Jacket by Alina Sewing Design Co. This is PDF only and not one that Minerva carry so will link a similar pattern to this post.

It's not majorly size inclusive unfortunately, but luckily for me, I fit into the largest size on the pattern - a size 18 which is for a 44.5" bust. It's a really good hand holding pattern as far as the instructions go. It's one I made very early on in my sewing journey with great success and I still wear that original, imperfect jacket that I made then, today.

The instructions are clear and logical, but there is a however. This pattern includes welt pockets. I made them successfully in my last version but did not enjoy the process - I found it stressful. I have made welt pockets in another make since and after my last attempt, I vowed never, ever to make them again. Needless to say, my new jacket here does not have the welt pockets. I'm more than happy with my decision not to include them - I always have pockets in my dresses and trousers so Im sure I won't miss them at all.

There are 20 pattern pieces to cut out and trace so by eliminating the welts, that brings it to 17 - still a good number. The fabric is a wonderful, organic cotton canvas printed in a design called Floret Flow. It's one of Minerva's exclusive designs and at 340g per square metre (equivalent to the recommended weight of 10-11 oz denim) it's the ideal weight.

I ordered 3 metres of the canvas fabric and have made a sling bag that matches. As this fabric is non directional, I still have approximately 1/2 metre left for a future project. Maybe a tote bag or a bum bag. It's way too precious to waste so I will keep it safe until inspiration takes hold.

I have already posted about my trials with the buttons but apart from that, everything went smoothly. The fabric is very comfortable as a jacket and I would recommend it. It washed and dried beautifully and needed minimal ironing to make it look pristine again.

If you're thinking of making a jacket, go on give it a try. There really is nothing to be scared about.
