Pattern Description: I AM Patterns Bob.

I am a trench coat with a straight cut and 4 lengths. I have a storm flap finished with a metal D-Ring at the back. I have a hidden button placket and welt pockets with a faux-button flap at the front. I have two collar options: a stand-up collar or a shirt collar. I have set-in sleeves, and at the bottom of my sleeves I have a placket with two buttons. I can be worn with a removable belt with optional buckle and eyelets. I’m fully lined and have a slit in the back. I come in 4 lengths: short, mid-thigh, knee-length and midi.

Pattern Sizing: 34-52 in PDF, 36-46 in paper. I made View G in a size 36.

Were the instructions easy to follow? For the most part. There were a couple of steps that were confusing to follow the diagrams. Fortunately, I AM Patterns has a sewalong that has photo instructions for the most difficult parts. By using the sewalong I was able to successfully complete the pattern.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?

Likes: I love that it's a single-breasted trench. The techniques (welt pockets, back vent, lining, front button placket) are slightly different from what I am used to but they gave really good results.

Dislikes: There's a decent amount of hand-stitching required but it was bearable.

TBH, the hidden button placket looks nice but is kind of a pain to fasten. I wish I had made a normal placket instead just for ease of use.

Fabric Used: Minerva Core Range Soft Cotton Duck Canvas Fabric Red for the outer fabric
Minerva Exclusive Summer Dreaming Cotton Sateen Fabric for the lining

The canvas is so easy to work with and not overly heavy, and the bright floral lining makes me smile.

Changes/alterations: I shortened the sleeves 2.5" and the length 2". I did not make any other fit adjustments.

I changed the belt to be a tie belt. I also could not cut it out in one piece on the lengthwise grain so I cut it cross-grain with a center seam.

Would you sew it again? Initially I thought I would only need one version of this trench but now I can see myself making more versions, perhaps with the collar, a visible button placket, and a shorter length.

Conclusion: This truly is my favorite make ever. I have always wanted a red coat. I think it's an absolute show-stopper and I look forward to wearing it for years to come.
