Minerva Core Range Blades Textured Cotton Linen in Teal
Style Arc Genoa Bias Cut Skirt
I usually order fabric with a pretty specific idea in mind, but this teal was on my want list before I had a plan! I was toying with the idea of pants, but my drawer is FULL of gorgeous lightweight pants (including the Bobs I was leaning toward) and I wanted something I could wear lots of seasons because this color is paramount to my wardrobe collection.
I realized that a plain skirt would serve me really well, so I chose one that I love, the Style Arc Genoa Bias Cut Skirt. If you’re concerned about the cutting layout, there is one included in the pattern to help you make the best use of your fabric. This pattern is extremely easy, the only aspect veering toward the complicated is treating the bias-cut pieces very gingerly as they are quick to warp and grow. There’s just one pattern piece, so you’re essentially just sewing two side seams, adding the elastic and hemming! The drape of the bias cut fabric is the highlight here. Someday I’ll get fancy and sew one in something like satin or silk for sheer glam.
This is a soft and stable fabric that is a looser weave composed of larger threads. There’s an earthy, subtle texture to this and it’s lovely. It has a mechanical stretch very similar to that of noil or the Minerva viscose linens. Take care not to let any cut part of your fabric dangle lest it change shape or stretch out.
The pattern calls for one inch elastic, but I opted for 1.5” which is my preference. I’ve also sewn Genoa successfully with 2” if that strikes your fancy. I serged the waistline edge and then folded that over just over ¼” onto the elastic and stitched, so that when I turned the elastic under, it’s completely and neatly encased in the waistband. I stitched in the ditch on both side seams to help keep the waistband in place. Boom! Quick and pretty classy skirt.
