My lovely summer skirt! This a hack of a Helens Closet Patterns Donovan Skirt.
The fabric is a beautiful viscose challis from Minerva in Coral. It washed and dried beautifully and shrinkage was well within the stated 10% suggested allowance.
The Donovan Skirt has two views, one shorter version and one longer with side slits. Both views have pockets. This skirt pattern did not work for me at all but this hack definitely does.
The front and back pattern pieces are an identical shape so it was easy for me to take the best bits of the pattern (in my opinion) for my lovely skirt. I used the top section including the waistband and drawstring. I made this part the length I wanted before adding a tier. My two tiers are rectangles at 1.5 times the width of the previous.
In my haste to complete my skirt, I made a silly error and sewed the waistband on the wrong way round and 'more haste, less speed' was very true in this case. It wouldn't have mattered if I hadn't have included the drawstring but I had made buttonholes to accommodate these and they ended up on the inside. Ho hum.
It was an easy fix though and errors like these are learning experiences so that's what I've put it down to. What I can't understand is why I always make silly mistakes on the simplest of patterns and yet when faced with something a little bit more challenging, it doesn't happen so much. Maybe it's to do with focus.
In summary, I'm very happy with my skirt. It's a little longer than I was expecting but I'm going to go with it as I like it. The fabric has grown on me more and more while I've been sewing and now that it's finished, I can honestly say that I love it.
I think I need some plain tee shirts now!
