Pattern Description: Simplicity 8554--In this Simplicity pattern sized for Misses and Miss Petite, our easy-to-sew soft trenchcoat and jacket are the perfect layering pieces. Length options include short, mid, and long with side slits and optional pockets and ties.
Pattern Sizing: Sizes 6-14, 14-22. I made the size 6 in View A, but I added the gun flaps from Views B/C.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes, but because I am 4'9" it is longer on me than on the model.
Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes, very simple.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
Likes: It's a very easy pattern for a coat. It's not lined and quick to make.
Dislikes: The facing wants to flap out, especially in this long view. It also might be ever so slightly long for me. When I wear it open I'm definitely at risk for tripping over the hem. I think if I wore it closed with the belt that would be less likely.
Fabric Used: Minerva Core Range Stretch Woven Linen Viscose Fabric. I had requested 3.5 meters and used all of it. I would have liked to have added the version with the tie sleeves but I did not have enough fabric for that. Although the fabric does have stretch in this application it just adds a bit of give--it's not overly stretchy.
Changes/alterations: I shortened the sleeves 2.5 inches. I handtacked the facing down in several spots to stop it poking out. I also handtacked the pockets to the front to keep them from shifting to the back.
Would you sew it again? This is actually my second version of this coat and I wouldn't rule out making another. This one will be a great light layer for fall and spring.
Conclusion: If you've never sewn a coat before this would be a great place to start. It's easy but has a very stylish look that works with so many outfits.
