“Ladies, Gentlemen, and those who have yet to make up their minds” … may I present … the Teal Coat of Dreams 🤩🤩🥳🥳🍾🍾🌈🌈

I braved the freezing sea front today to capture this stunning “seaside” colourway, and what a showstopper this coat is!! ✨✨

This project has been a labour of love and I’m SO pleased I took the time to use couture techniques to make my teal coat dreams become a reality 🥳🥳

I LOVED working with boiled wool for the first time. Although it’s technically a woven, it has some mechanical give, and you therefore have to treat it carefully, but I love that it doesn’t fray and you can leave all the edges raw if you wish. I left my hem edge raw, and all of my seam allowances.

This is the ‘seaside’ colourway and it’s a stunning deep teal petrol blue. Minerva core range boiled wools come in a variety of different weights, and this is the medium weight. I think this is perfect for a thick lined coat. It’s not so thick that you can’t sew multiple layers, but certainly kept me warm on a very windy beach today! This coat is so warm and cosy that although I’ve made room for a thick jumper underneath, I’m not sure I’ll need one 🤣🤣

The fabric has already been treated to create the felted effect, but I decided to steam the cloth with my iron as a secondary pretreatment before I cut into it.
TOP TIP: use an oven glove to steam fabrics with an iron and protect your hands!! 👍🏼👍🏼

I wasn’t sure how my midrange sewing machine would cope with thick wool fabric, but honestly it handled it beautifully!! I loosened my presser foot pressure from a 6 to a 3, and used a ballpoint needle for the majority of the sewing, but otherwise I just sewed carefully and took my time ☺️☺️

TOP TIP: use a wooden clapper on boiled wool to achieve beautifully pressed seams without damaging the wool with too much heat from your iron.

I’ve lined this with the Minerve Core Range viscose satin in the honey colourway and the colour of this is stunning. It’s a really warm toffee gold colour and it works perfectly for a slippery coat lining. I’ll be honest, I found it incredibly hard to work with because it’s SO slippery, but it was worth all the effort for this end result!! 🐍🐍

I was so surprised how simple this make was (basically like a T-shirt with a collar!!) Although a project like a coat seems really involved and daunting, I promise it’s just like any other garment! You sew seams, you press, you create something amazing!! 🤓🤓

I have LOVED the process of making my own coat, and I am already planning multiple more!! 😉😉
