Spooky season is upon, so now is the purrfect time to share this make! I used Printed Polycotton Fabric with this adorable and Halloweenish black cat head print. I chose to use the Lilac color, which is true to the color online, but if you want to go REALLY hard on the Halloween aspect, you can go with the orange background. It is also available in white.
The fabric is lightweight but durable, and being a stable polycotton, is very easy to work with. It is a great fabric option for beginner sewists and can work well with many projects. I was torn between making some Halloween pajamas in this print or a more fun piece that I could wear in public. The fun choice won out and I decided to make one of my favorite patterns—the Megan Nielsen Pattern’s Sudley Dress/Shirt.
The Sudley is one of my favorites because it has so many versatile options (I’ve previously posted about a dress version I’ve made of this). You have dress options with potential drop waist, and three sleeve length variations. You can add the collar or not and you can use the tie closure or a hook-and-eye. In addition there is no “correct” front and back pieces—you can wear the key hole cutout and ties in the front or the back. For this make I used the collar, ties, long sleeve with elasticized wrist hems, and made it into a peplum top. There isn’t specific directions to do that style of type but it was very easy to improvise. I cut the bodice to the line for the high waisted gathered waist, and then I believe I cut the skirt piece to the first line on the skirt pattern (which I think is a line marking for the drop waist variation of the dress. Either way it was about ~10 inches of the skirt length.
The combination of this fabric and this pattern was perfect—it was very easy to cut out and put together because the fabric is so easy to work with along with the Megan Nielsen pattern instructions being really great. (Helps probably too that I’ve made it before though) I think a confident beginner could easily sew this pattern, especially if you didn’t use the key hole bodice and just used two of the other bodice pieces—that would cut out the “trickier” aspect of getting the bias binding around the curve.
All in all, I had a lot of fun making this and can’t wait to wear it for the upcoming season. Like I said, would be great for pjs too or even Halloween decor—pillowcases/placemats/coasters etc.!
