I have been on a shirt sewing kick the last 5 weeks and it has been so much fun. I was most excited to try this pattern and the Minerva fabric I had picked out for it. The pattern is Paper Theory’s Olya Shirt and the fabric is Minerva Core Range Yarn Dyed Cotton Chambray Fabric in Sky Blue. I love this fabric and it is perfect for the Olya shirt. I did order 2 yards of it and just had just a bit left. I am always pleased to have a just a bit left but when I am laying out pattern pieces, it makes me a bit nervous that I might be short.
A bit more about this Chambray Fabric, it is 100% cotton, 144cm 56 inches wide and as stated on the Mineva website it is light to medium weight. The fabric does have some substance to it and it amazing to sew. As stated, my fabric is in Sky Blue, which I thought looked most like a traditional chambray shirt. The look I was going for with the Olya shirt and its interesting details. There are nine other colors in this chambray fabric and each one is so pretty.
Now to talk about the shirt, the Olya Shirt has been popping up on my Instagram feed and I knew I needed to sew it. I love the interesting details especially the yoke, sleeve, and front pocket detail. It is twist on the classic button up shirt, traditional with that extra bit of fun details. I made a size 10 and added one inch to the sleeves, my normal adjustment. I did try the shirt on just before adding the cuffs and the sleeves still were a bit short. My solution was to add one inch to the cuffs, which made the sleeves just the right length. I did have that bit of fabric left to recut the cuffs, whew! I did change the cuff from one button closure to a two-button closure.
I am usually quite happy with how a garment turns out the first time I sew it but this time I know I can do better the next time I make this pattern. This pattern is fun to make but you must do quite a bit of thinking and at times I felt like I was doing some origami! For my future Olya shirts, I am going to measure and mark the fronts for the pocket and make sure each side it symmetrical. Also, work on my corners, I have some puckering at the pocket corners. Even with the puckers, I love this shirt, it is just fun and unique. I can always use another chambray shirt in my wardrobe and this one will be well worn this fall.
The fabric was great to sew and the topstitching looks beautiful on this chambray. Also, I made all the buttonholes without having to redo any of them. That is a record! I did not sew buttonholes in the pockets, I just stitched the button on top and through the layers.
If you want to sew a new button up shirt and want a challenge, try the Olya shirt. You will love the finish garment and you will love it even more with this Minerva Core Range Yarn Dyed Cotton Chambray Fabric
