Hi Makers,
I’m back with a new sewing project today. This time it’s a blouse and I must say I had a different plan for this fabric but instagram influencers changed it 😊 I was ordering this crepe for a WFH suit, I was planning to make a pair of palazzo trousers on elastic waistband (well, that might still happen if I squeeze it out of the remaining piece) and a short sleeve blouse. When the fabric arrived, I was amazed by it, It’s a perfect match for this idea actually. I was surprised that it has more silky touch than the crepes I usually had. This is a nice feature.
But then, one day I was scrolling some reels on instagram and saw a gorgeous blouse, with an oversized fit and some ruffles instead of cuffs & elastic band on the wrist. I was in love. Saved it. And then a friend of mine reposted it, we started discussing, I realised I have a suitable pattern to hack & it’s actually an easy one. So I thought why not to recreate it? If I love the design so much, and I knew it would perfectly fit this crepe fabric. So that’s how it started 😍
As for the pattern, I used Kramnychka Patterns Lykeria shirt. It’s a Ukrainian patterns brand which started releasing their patterns in English few months ago and you can find it on Etsy now. I already made one Lykeria shirt in linen, with no modifications, so I knew the fit is perfect. Also the instructions come with step-by-step descriptions and photos which makes sewing much easier 👍 I went several sizes up (I’m 38 size and I took size 44), but actually it’s not a must. It’s a loose fit shirt so even if you take your size it will look good here. I just wanted some extra oversize effect, and it’s not too much for my taste. I only needed to hack the sleeves. I divided each sleeve into 4 pieces and added 5 cm between each section to have this ruffle. Also I didn’t cut the cuffs, I just made longer sleeves (I placed the cuff pattern piece at the bottom of the sleeve and added this length (including all those seam allowances from the pattern pieces). The casing for elastic band on the wrist is made out of a bias tape sewn underneath. It’s even easier than making a regular shirt, because you skip the cuffs 😉
As for the fabrics, this is what you need to know:
- You will need to press well every seam to get a neat result. For this crepe it’s crucial. However I have an impression that after the wash it wouldn’t need any press, which is nice. It doesn’t wrinkle.
- I recommend using a thin needle (size 70) or maybe microtex would be even better. With smaller needle you will get nicer seams here.
- This crepe frays a lot, so I would recommend either overlock finish or closed seams, like French seam or bias binding. I used French seams everywhere.
