Hi #MinervaMakers I hope this finds you well! My latest #MinervaBrandAmbassador fabric was this delightful mint green cotton swiss dot double gauze from the Minerva Core Range. As it is summer in the U.K., I thought I’d go for a lighter fabric and make something suitable for my holidays … this fabric is perfect! It’s light, breathable and the textured spots add just the right amount of interest. The colour is even more striking in real life – it’s called ‘Bright Mint’ and it’s just like a delicious mint sorbet!

Soft to the touch and with a good drape, I chose to make this beautiful cotton double gauze into a ‘Nora Tank’ by Sew Bake Make Patterns. I came across this sewing pattern on Instagram and fell in love! As in the pattern description, it is a breezy feminine top that is quick to sew and a staple summer wardrobe piece. I immediately bought it from Candice’s Etsy shop! The deep V neck really appealed to me as I have a large bust and I find this type of top more flattering on me, and I also really loved the versions with the self-tie straps on the shoulders. I really like the fact that the pattern offers you various different options so you can make it your own and fit it to your body shape. Having resisted the ruffle sleeve option, I decided to make ‘View B’ with the ties at the shoulder strap and made it full length as I wanted the option to tuck it into my shorts. The colour goes beautifully with denim and I envisaged it looking even better with a holiday tan!

The pattern instructions are really comprehensive so the make was very simple – there are 42 pages which guide you through the four different views in great detail with useful drawings to go with each step. There is a choice of finishing methods with either a facing finish or bias bound armholes. I chose the facing version as my bias binding making skills still need a bit of work! However, as the fabric is light in body and in colour, the facing can be seen through the fabric. If you are someone who is bothered by this, you may want to line the pattern pieces before construction with a light breathable lining fabric. I decided to hand sew the facing to the top using a catchstitch. Usually I would do anything to avoid hand sewing as I am not the most confident, but I didn’t want the facing to flip out when being worn. After watching the recommended tutorial, I had a go and am really happy with the results – it was definitely worth the extra effort.

I would definitely recommend the pattern and the gorgeous fabric for a summer make. As soon as I got back from holidays, I made a dress version of this top by adding two gathered rectangles onto the hemline of the top. I have also looked at the other colours available in this fabric as it was perfect for the warmer weather – I’m leaning towards ‘Fern Green’ or ‘Lilac Blush’ for a summer shirt!

Until next time, happy sewing!
