Pattern Description: McCalls 5375 is a vintage jumpsuit/romper pattern. It has 3 different necklines, 2 lengths, and it also includes a pattern for a t-shirt.
Pattern Sizing: 8-16 and it comes in single sizes. I sewed a size 8.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes, I think it does.
Were the instructions easy to follow? The instructions were only 1 page front and back, so more brief that I am accustomed to these days. I thought that they were very clear and straightforward though. Kind of similar to modern Style Arc instructions.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
Likes: The pattern gives a nice variety of styles in one envelope. The single size patterns come with seam allowances marked so it's easy to check the measurements and make adjustments.
Dislikes: Design does not come with pockets--I added my own side seam pockets. Although the method for finishing the button placket at the bottom works, it's maybe not the cleanest. It seems like there should be a better way, though I don't know what that would be. And the crotch length seems extraordinarily short to me for this style of jumpsuit.
Fabric Used: I used a Minerva exclusive viscose-linen blend. This is probably my favorite of the Minerva exclusive substrates I've tried so far. It's weighty and drapey but cool to the touch. it's perfect for summery garments. I used 3 meters of fabric and there were only small scraps left. This is a fabric-hungry pattern because of the princess seams and long body pieces.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
1: I shortened the bust princess seams by .75" for my A-cup chest based on an article from Threads magazine. After doing this, i also shaved 3/8" off the side front seam to remove some extra width from the chest as well.
2: I lengthened the crotch on both front and back by 1 inch and I wish I had added another 1/2". My opinion is that this style shouldn't sit too close to the body and I can feel the crotch seam up against me at times. it's still wearable now but wouldn't have been if i had not lengthened it.
3: I shortened the legs a total of 7 inches to make it ankle length on me (I'm 4'9").
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I would really like to make the romper as well but maybe not this year. Next time I would raise the armhole as it feels a bit low and bring in the side seams at the chest just a smidge more.
Conclusion: I was inspired to make this by my friend @Myra Lorraine
She made a romper from this pattern and I immediately tracked down a copy for myself. I was not expecting to love this as much as I do! it's so swishy and pretty in this floral print. I feel fabulous wearing it.
