Let me start by saying if you haven't sewn or at least felt the core range linen that minerva has produced, well, you're missing out. The hand and drape of it are just perfect. I want to fill my wardrobe with clothing made solely from this linen. It's also not as "wrinkly" (is that a word??) as I tend to associate with linen.
I haven't had a white dress in forever and somehow got in my mind that I needed a white shirtdress. They're just so versatile and with different accessories seem to be a whole new outfit.
I made this cute white shirt dress for Easter but since it was chilly, no one could see my favorite part of the dress. The little tie back adds some interest to this otherwise classic pattern.
This pattern is an old one by Celina Bailey. She's since, sadly, closed her pattern shop but if you're fortunate enough to have bought one of her patterns they are very well written. I was able to pattern test for her a few times and really loved her attention to detail.
I was looking for an interesting shirt dress pattern (and there are several good ones out there - Style Arc has a few, also Marsha Style has the Alea...) when I remembered the Perkins shirt dress was already in my pattern file. It's been probably close to ten years since I sewed this pattern so I didn't remember how surprisingly simple it is. Maybe it's just me, but when I think a task is going to be strenuous and make me "brain weary" I tend to put it off until I can give myself a pep talk and get myself motivated. With sewing I find if I just take it one step at a time and "slow-sew", no matter how challenging the pattern, it becomes more do-able. This pattern has such a fun way of enclosing the body and raglan style sleeves. The "burrito method" becomes more like a dumpling shape and I really wish I'd taken a picture for you. I kept thinking I was going to have a lot of seam ripping in my future, but it totally worked.
I'm debating on adding an elastic tunnel to the back of the dress so I don't have as much to belt in. I might baste one in to see if it helps, but regardless, I love this dress and know I'll be wearing it often through the summer.
Next time I'm wearing my hair up so I can show off the cute back detail!
Happy sewing!
