Hellllooooooo Makers!!
It’s been a few days since I’ve shared a new make with you. Whilst injured, I was able to prop my leg up to sew, ensuring that it remained straight.
Having an injured leg definitely doubled the sewing time, but I got there.
In this post you will see a gorgeous springtime blouse made in a Minerva exclusive challis which I fell in love with the moment I saw it! Minerva have a great range of viscose challis fabrics, with and extensive variations of colour and pattern, to suit every palette. They kindly sent this as part of the brand ambassador programme.
This design is called ‘Parallel Park’ and I chose it because I really wanted to make a top in colours that would brighten up my day despite the dreariness that we have been experiencing of late. The vibrant pattern also made me think of spring, despite it not being floral.
I believe that it’s important to experiment with bright colours and I’m always willing to take a chance on something new. As a sewist, my motto is - why make things in black and white, when you have a whole rainbow to choose from? Looking at my wardrobe, I now struggle to find black clothing when I need them, lol.
When prepping fabric for sewing, I tend to wash them on a cold energy-saving wash, which last approximately 30 minutes. I also check for colour fastness before washing fabrics together. The good news is that there are no such problems with these fabrics - they washed and dried as expected. I also did not notice much shrinkage, but it is super duper important to ensure that you do not skip this part!
Viscose fabric creases tremendously after washing so I made sure to iron the fabric before cutting out the pattern. My preference is to use a rotary cutter and mat which I used on this project. Again, no problem.
The pattern is Simplicity 9469, that I saw on Sew Essential’s YouTube channel last year. I had it in the basket for a short while before purchasing. Once it arrived, I was waiting for the right fabric to come onto my radar.
The keyhole detail is what piqued my interest in this pattern, but I was pleasantly surprised that it was so easy to make - honestly, there were no challenges what so ever!
I didn’t have to make any alterations which is lucky because you all know I don’t usually toile any makes. This is something that I’m trying to change - I’m looking for a good course, so if you know of any, answers on a postcard or in the comments below.
#thankyouI do think that this too could work well in a nice cotton fabric with even larger sleeves to turn up the drama. What about a lace where I could bind the keyhole rather than doing a facing - there’s a lot of possibilities with this top, I just have to unlock them!
These ideas definitely mean that I am going to attempt to make a few more to wear this summer, even into the autumn - however, my list is growing and time is so limited but we’ll see.
Happy Sewing
