Hi Makers!!
I’m super excited to be sharing my 2nd Closet Core Kelly Anorak. I made my first Kelly with some gorgeous soft shell fabric about 6 months ago (see post
https://www.minerva.com/people/1150385) and just LOVE it. I have worn it constantly – particularly through the winter months.
We live on a water-access only island on Sydney’s northern beaches, so my transport to and fro the mainland is by boat. We are hit with many weather systems and I find that having a lovely weather proof jacket saves me from getting absolutely soaked when I need to get off the island in wet weather. But my current Kelly is HOT in summer and I have found that I need more of a rain jacket for the warmer months. Enter my new Kelly …
I jumped at the chance of ordering Minerva’s Core Range Riviera Water Resistant Coating Fabric, thinking that I’d make a new Kelly (with no lining) and I’d have my new rain jacket … and it’s perfect. I had read reviews from other makers saying that the fabric was completely waterproof. I haven’t tested the theory as yet, but from running under a tap, it would appear that this is the case!! Fingers crossed!! The Coating is 100% polyester woven with a textured side and the reverse is a sort of silvery backing.
The colour is a gorgeous claret colour – just lovely. I opted to do snaps and zipper in black, and have even sewn the jacket with a black thread for a bit of a contrast look. The snaps are a brushed black (ie not shiny) and I think they suit the claret jacket very well.
I had already made my usual adjustments on the pattern for my previous Kelly make, ie grading between 2 sizes between bust and hips. However, on my previous Kelly make, I found that I needed to reduce the seam allowance on the sleeves to fit my (HUGE) biceps. So for this jacket I did a small bicep adjustment on the sleeve piece and it now fits perfectly. The only other adjustment that I made for this jacket was to lengthen it by about 5cm. I found that when it’s raining and I’m driving the boat, my legs were getting wet. I know that 5cm isn’t a huge amount, but it is now long enough to cover my thighs and this will make my trip a lot more comfortable. Oh yes, one more adjustment … there is a waist casing for a drawstring which on the pattern has eyelets on the outside of the jacket. I opted to put the eyelets on the inside of the jacket so that the drawstring was on the inside. Any ‘dangly bits’, like drawstrings, can sometimes get caught up with boat ropes when trying to tie up. Safety first!! Oh the joys of living offshore !!!!
I have tagged below all materials I used for the jacket, snaps, eyelets, zipper, etc all of which I purchased from Minerva. What I forgot to order was a black drawstring to match the black I used on the jacket, so at this stage I’ve got a white drawstring until I can gete to the shops.
Pressing the fabric was actually pretty good. I was concerned that a hot iron would melt the fabric, but I used a cotton cloth when pressing and it pressed up beautifully with crisp seams.
Like the last time I made this jacket, I followed the blog posts on Closet Core’s website which has detailed instructions and fabulous pictures for every step. I found that the details in the blog posts were much more informative than the pattern instructions themselves.
It’s a beautifully drafted pattern and I just loved the whole process of seeing the jacket come together. The flat fell seams make the inside look as pretty as the outside.
I am SO incredibly happy with this jacket … and proud once again that I managed to pull the project off.
The Kelly Anorak pattern had been on my wishlist for a couple of years …. and now I have made two. I LOVE both of them … and especially love this jacket because of the fabric. ❤️❤️
Thanks so much for reading and Happy Sewing!!
