Have you had a garment that you needed and did not know you needed? Well, a quilted sweatshirt is one of those garments for me. I saw this beautiful Minerva Core Range Quilted Textured Stretch Knit Fabric and knew I needed that fabric. It comes in 27 colors, so selecting a color is a hard decision. This fall I had my colors done and I am shopping fabric from my card so I went with the Dark Petrol which really looks like a teal to me. The fabric is a polyester-viscose- lycra blend. The lycra is 3% so a nice amount for stretch and recovery. Also, this fabric washes and dries beautifully.
A nice sweatshirt is a good staple in the wardrobe and this fabric is so warm. The warmth is perfect for winter, especially the extreme cold we just had. So, with a sweatshirt in mind, I went with Sinclair Patterns’ Nova Knit Raglan, which I have made several times before. I went to my ribbing stash and found just a bit of a perfect match. When I say bit, I do mean just a little bit, in fact, I had to piece a small section to have enough for the neckband. This two-inch pieced section is at the center back, so not very noticeable. I did add one of Minerva’s labels to the center back, such a finishing touch to a garment.
Using all my teal ribbing, I went with the quilted fabric for the cuffs and bottom bands. The Nova Raglan is a long sweatshirt and I thought I had shortened it enough for what I wanted. After putting on the bottom band, I did another try-on. Well, not enough length was eliminated and yes, that meant unsewing the bottom band, taking off another two inches and then I had a length I liked.
A sweatshirt goes together so quickly and I made the entire garment in less than two hours. One thing I do need to alter on my pattern, change the neckline. I remembered this after I finished my new sweatshirt, I feel like the neckline is wide and low. One thing in the new year, I want to resolve is more adding more notes to a pattern. Then I will be sure to remember what changes I need to make. With this wide neckline, I feel like my sweatshirt looks better with a turtleneck. I am wearing a stripe Nikko sleeveless top under my sweatshirt for the photos. I think this will be a great combination for the winter.
I need to add when cutting out my fabric, I lined the center front and back on the points of the diamond quilted pattern. This was a great way to keep the fabric lined up, plus I like how it looks down the center. If you are looking for a great fabric to keep you warm this winter, check this one out, you will love it!
