Like many sewist packing for holiday, I too had the overwhelming urge to sew a whole new wardrobe the day before leaving for my trip to Sweden. Of course I didn’t have time for that, but thankfully the Style Arc Cher Knit Dress is a quick and easy sew and one I could complete before my plane took off.
I’ve made the Cher Knit Dress, hacked into a sweater, once before but that time I mistakenly cut it out with the greatest stretch going vertically instead of horizontally and it was difficult to get over my head. I was disappointed but knew I wanted to try this pattern again in the near future. And I certainly learned my lesson about the proper direction for stretch!
Style Arc patterns don’t often come with detailed directions, but this pattern is quite simple and comes with both written directions as well as a numbered diagram so I think any level sewist, even a beginner, could make this pattern and be satisfied with the results. The only alteration I made was to leave off the skirt portion and hem the bottom of the top portion of the dress making a boxy style sweater.
For my new Cher Knit sweater I used the Minerva Core Range Linen Viscose Sweater Knit Stretch Fabric in the color White. This fabric is very drapey, fairly transparent, and has some natural fibers throughout. I would call this a spring sweater knit and think it would be great for layering, especially to throw on over activewear. I wore this sweater over a tank on the plane ride to Sweden and again one day walking around Old Town, Stockholm. I really enjoyed the natural fibers which truly helped to regulate my temperature. I was never too hot or too cold and I felt really stylish in the pattern design.
I’m not sure if this pattern and fabric pairing was the most successful though. I think I would like the neck portion to be a bit more stable to have the impact I was looking for. In the future I would also narrow the sleeves toward my wrists. I seem to only wear this sweater with the sleeves pushed up and I think it's because they’re a bit too wide and bother me.
Have you made the Cher Knit Dress or used the Minerva Core Range Linen Viscose Sweater Knit? I’d love to know what you think!
