Fabric and Notions: Minerva Customizable Jeans Making Kit (all products linked)
Jeans - we all wear them but have you made yours yet? I am happy to say that I finally took a leap of faith and never looking back! Let me introduce you to the brand new Legato Jeans pattern/workshop by Love Notions, and the fabulous Minerva jeans making kit I used to make my dream pair of jeans!
The Love Notions Legato is your classic mid-rise stovepipe straight legs stretch jeans. It has the traditional five pockets, zip fly, back yoke and belt loops - all beautifully drafted and clearly illustrated in step-by-step instructions. The stovepipe silhouette is not just on-trend but also practical, comfortable and versatile for styling.
What makes Legato truly unique from other Jeans patterns out there is the amazing built-in customizable fit. Sized from US 0-32 (Full hip 34"-60"), you can personalize your fit by choosing from straight vs. curvy figure, flat vs. full seat, petite/regular/tall rise and inseams. That's 2x2x3x3=36 different fitting profiles for each size - all done for you within the pattern to help you achieve the perfect fit for your perfect pair of jeans. I am 158cm petite, with typical east Asian figure, which makes shopping for jeans not always the easiest where I live. For my Legato, I made size 0 graded to size 2 waist with the straight figure, flat seat, petite rise and regular inseams. The fit is amazing without any further adjustment - which is such a delight!
Now onto the beautiful Minerva kit I used to make my dream pair of jeans! Like all Minerva Exclusive sewing kits, it comes with all the fabrics, notions, and hardwares for the entire make. For jeans making especially it's such a treat to have all the supplies in one place ready to go, taking out the leg work of gathering each element separately (which is quite a long list!) and the risk of things not working well together. During the development and testing of the Legato pattern, I definitely came to appreciate the many quality elements that makes a successful pair of jeans:
- First of all, the denim itself. The specs and quality of the denim makes or breaks your project. Finding the right weight and stretch is essential to not only a good fit but wearing comfort. The Minerva kit I used for Legato includes the Minerva Core Range 300gsm stretch washed denim which has the perfect stretch percentage for ease of the pattern. It comes in 3 classic colours (navy, blue and black) and I used the black. Being a washed denim, it is softer than raw denim and requires fewer pre-washes. I ran my denim through 2 wash cycles and it came out so soft and lovely! I wore my Legato all day after the photoshoot as it was the most comfortable pair of jeans I own now, and it retained its shape well.
- Then because it's jeans, we need hardware! The kit comes with jeans buttons, rivets and metal zipper. The button and rivets come in several shades and I chose the classic bronze. They are a breeze to install with a hammer and have the perfect shank height for Legato in the 300gsm denim (which means no fidgeting with pliers trying to snip off little bits of rivets...not fun). The metal zipper comes in a variety of lengths which comes in very handy because the Legato pattern has different zipper length for each size range. You can of course adjust zipper length by removing those metal teeth from a long zipper - but why not just get the perfect length to match your size? ;-)
- Last but not least, notions and additional supplies. When sewing and topstitching with denim, don't overlook the absolute need for the right needles and threads. It will save you lots of tears. I am soooo thankful for the tried and tested ones included in this kit and they are top quality all the way. My topstitching was smooth sailing throughout the entire project no matter how many layers of denim I threw at it. To be honest, I held my breath when it came to the belt loops when the machine foot was raised to the max because of the thickness there - but my topstitched bar-tacks went in like melted butter! It was such a sewing high-point that I was actually a little disappointed when it was all done and I had to stop ;-). Oh and don't forget the cute red polka dot pocket lining! Only I will see them in real life but they just make me so happy!
Now that you've got an idea of how much I love my new Legato jeans and the amazing experience with both the kit and the pattern - stay tuned for more reels, photos and tips during the Legato release week! If you'd like to try your hands at jeans making, you can't go wrong starting with the customizable kit linked in the post. The Love Notions Legato pattern is on release sale this week (
