Utamika here taking you on another adventure of fabric and creativity in sewing something new. This garment utilizes this gorgeous pink cotton batik fabric. We are in the height of Fall here in the northern hemisphere and colours within colours are so in for this season. As someone who love to sew colourful clothing the onset of the colder weather is additional inspiration to think of creative ways to ensure my wardrobe is infused with colours. This print was perfect and after a few ideas on what to make I finally settled on this look.
Usually when summer is over the colours change in my wardrobe options. While I try to keep colours in I have to admit that darker tones sometimes are worn more. So this is me being intentional about incorporating some colourful pieces at the onset of Fall. This batik print is a perfect mirror of the fallen leaves in the print making it versatile to transition into summer next year. I absolutely love the final look of this dress. Let’s talk about how we got to this.
The silhouette for this pattern is the simplest of many yet the batik in my opinion makes it richer. For the pattern I paired a cropped tank top pattern with my three-tiered maxi skirt pattern to create this midi style dress. The print hides the tiered design with the pattern but still enhances the look of the dress up close. However, with a few edits here and there the two combined beautifully in my opinion.
As always before creating this piece, I prewashed the fabric. There were no issues washing it. It dried well in the dryer with no visible shrinkage. I got to work right away tracing and prepping my pattern pieces and then cutting the fabric. There was no print matching that was done with this look so it was easily put together. I added the two side pockets because that is a must with my dresses. For the straps I opted to adding elastic in the band which made it easy in event the straps were too long. This construction detail was the first time I tried it. I liked the final feel of the garment with it and would definitely try it again.
I always see the one-piece as a great wardrobe addition that offers versatility in styling. This dress is perfect for layering. The loose fit of the style allows me to pair it easily with my favourite broad belt and denim jacket. It was a bit nippy out there so I opted to add my infinity scarf. I can see this dress styled further with some tights and high boots and a shirt too. Many options with this tank top style silhouette.
I hope you enjoyed this as much as I did and feel inspired to do something different with colour in your Fall wardrobe or just something fun with cotton batik.
Thanks again for stopping by and reading . It has been a pleasure.
