An actual shirt! This is the Fairfield Button-up by Thread Theory in a Rose and Hubble fabric chosen by the model/victim (husband).
The pattern is fantastic. I can't praise the instructions enough. Shirts are HARD. I now know all sorts of things about flat fell seams, plackets and collar stands that I never knew existed. But it takes you through them in real step by step detail. I think there are sew-along videos on their website - it was nice to know they were there in case - but it turned out I didn't need them!
There were a couple of bits where I did a bit of unpicking - and I finished a few bits by hand at the end. The thing is that the instructions/seam allowances are very specific so my usual slapdash guesswork wasn't up to scratch. I wonder if newer sewing machines work better for such millimetre details too.
I had a problem when I bought the pattern from Minerva that it was missing a sleeve piece! Bizarre - thought I was going mad. And disappointingly it took a month to sort out - but eventually they sent me a pdf so I could print the missing bit.
Size-wise, the pattern comes in two versions - one for a more 'full figured' man which accounts for a large middle. We didn't need that one and went for the regular fit - but worth keeping in mind there are two sets of pieces in the pack. In my enthusiasm at the start I cut out a couple of the wrong pieces. My husband measured between an XL and XXL so I went for the larger. It looks good and is comfy - but I'll go for the XL next time I think. There's a lot of unnecessary fabric in the mid back and the upper part of the sleeve.
I didn't want to go too much off the pattern for my first one, but I added some fun contrast fabric for the collar stand and cuff facing and treated myself to some 'one of a kind' labels. You can't see it from the outside, but it pleases me. And him.
It took a while to do but I thoroughly enjoyed it and I have a happy customer who's already eyeing up other fabrics for the next one...
