Hey Folks! It is a happy and sunny day here in Texas, so I figured today would be a great day to share with you my jacket I made with this Simplicity 8554. The fabric that I used was gifted to me from
Minerva.com. It is a Polyester suiting fabric in color blue. Before now, I always assumed that suiting fabric was always firm, super thick, or stiff. However, this fabric is none of the above. It is super soft, lightweight, flowy, and feels great on my skin. I chose to use this fabric for this jacket (that I absolutely adore) but I could easily see myself using that same fabric for a dress, short blazer or a lightweight pair of trousers.
This pattern is considered an easy sew pattern and Simplicity definitely kept its promise in that department. This was by far one of the easier jackets that I've sewn. The instructions were super easy and clear to understand and there were no tricky areas that I found to be head scratching or difficult. There was one area that I had to double check, and that was the pocket placement. There are several markings on the front piece that I had to focus on before sewing on the pocket pieces. The notes on the pattern were very clear but being that there were so many in one general area, I suggest (as i did) verifying that those markings make sense for your version and length. This jacket is unlined and I used my serger to finish off all of the raw edges so make a nice clean look on the inside. I prefer things to be beautiful inside and out! I usually make that statement when referring to people, lol but it applies to fashion too.
The version that I sewed was version A with the length of version B. I am 5 feet 2 inches and I usually opt for jackets and dresses in the shorter versions if I can. Please don't get me wrong, I love a good maxi dress and long trench coat, but in the world of slow fashion, items considered maxi or long length are too long for me. I don't consider myself a lazy sewist per se, but I don't like the idea of altering a pattern too much, it just feels like a hassle to even think about it LOL!
What I love about this jacket is that it is super versatile. I can wear it open and loose and it gives a really casual vibe. I can wrap it tight and close it up and it gives a lot more studious and academic look. I haven't tried it yet, but I am almost positive that even if worn with something more formal it would be beautiful enough to keep you warm and still look appropriate.
Today, I have paired my jeans, boots, and simple sweater with my new jacket for a comfortable and casual look. I absolutely enjoyed making this jacket in this wonderful fabric. Please let me know what you think.
