I’m wearing my latest top to work today.
I can’t resist a boxy blouse for my work wardrobe - especially one with a statement detail (but not TOO much of a statement, if you know what I mean).
I’ve been eyeing up the Cuff Top pattern from The Assembly Line for a while now, attracted by the elasticated cuff. I finally decided to take the plunge and try it out with this Minerva core range gingham fabric.
The pattern was pretty simple, with just three pattern pieces (front, back and facing). I chose to do the front and back as single pieces, although the pattern includes a centre seam, because I wasn’t sure it would would with the gingham pattern and the pattern matching would give me nightmares! But with a plain fabric the centre seam would look great.
It was relatively easy to construct and sew, although the elastic did cause me some problems. The first cuff was unpicked several times before it was neat (well, neat enough!). It’s a pattern suitable for beginners, maybe more confident ones with that elastic. I did second guess the pattern a few times, the elastic looked too wide and too long, but I trusted it and it worked in the end.
I read a few reviews before I started and so sized down to a M size. Looking at the finished top, I’m wondering if I could go even smaller. I like a boat neckline, but this one seems a little bit too wide - there are details on The Assembly Line website about how to change it so I might look there for inspiration next time.
I really like working with this fabric. The gingham is just the right size I was looking for. It was really easy to cut and sew and manipulate. The final top is not see through at all. And best of all it seems quite resistant to creases. I’ve washed it a couple of times and even packed it in a suitcase to go away and I haven’t needed to iron it yet! It’s reasonably priced too.
The pattern and fabric have come together really well to make a top I will definitely wear regularly.
