Hi everyone!
It’s New Years Eve here in Melbourne at the moment and I’ve finished this comfy loungewear set! From the moment I saw this print and realised it was a stretch fabric, I knew I needed to have it. The fabric used is Lady McElroy Viscose Jersey Knit Fabric Brown and was a perfect choice for this lounge wear set… and who doesn’t love animal print!
Working with stretch is super enjoyable for me, I love cutting, pinning, pressing and sewing the fabric particularly when it is knit. My last couple of projects I worked with fabric that had minimal give, and I was excited to begin with this new project. Initially I was coming up with ideas on what to create with this fabric and narrowed to down to a t-shirt dress, a turtle neck set and the crew neck long sleeve and bike short set. In Melbourne at the moment, we are in summer (although quite temperamental) so the long sleeve is light enough as a quick top layer, and the bike shorts are a great staple underneath baggy tees.
I used two different patterns to create this loungewear set. My long sleeve is the “Tulia Tee” by Sewing Masin. I have also made the short sleeve version of this which I loved as it has a really boxy fit that is my idea of comfort. The sleeves aren’t inset, which create a really great batwing style sleeve. I used the Sewing Masin’s long sleeve hack to lengthen the sleeves, which has made this top the perfect comfy top.
My bike shorts were created using an Isabelle Schultz pattern. This pattern is so simple to work with, has minimal pieces and fiddling around. I think next time, I will also add a side pocket for some handy storage too. Initially I wasn’t sure if my jersey knit would have the right give to create a hugging bike shorts, but I am impressed with how the fabric stretches and creates a shape that is flattering but not as restrictive as a spandex.
While sewing this project, I worked with a stretch needle with a zigzag stitch, as well as an overlocker stitch. The thread colour I decided on was a tan to work in with the colours through the animal print.
I’ve been wearing this set at home, and it is so versatile because it’s cute enough to leave the house in, but soft enough on the inside to lounge and sleep in as well. Every step of this sewing process has been a breeze, and every mid way try on was positive and simple. This has been such a successful make for me, and I’m already cooking up some more stretch set ideas!
Until next time,
