I’m back with another fun make today! Minerva sent me a beautiful and rather hard to find cut of Liberty called Wild at Heart to play with. This fabric is interesting because even though it is lawn, it appears more like denim or chambray because of the dark colors. The base cloth is a navy, and the floral motif is black (or perhaps very dark navy). The fabric features climbing flowers and vines and while the design is quite muted because it is rather dark, I find that the deep color of the fabric itself makes for a striking garment.
I chose to make the Chalk and Notch Fringe Dress, which is a favorite pattern. It is a classic silhouette, and it really looks great with most any fabric. It has very clean lines, and I love that the updated pattern features bust darts for a C/D cup, which I’ve used, and it fits wonderfully. I also added waist ties to the front waist darts for additional waist shaping.
Contrast is typically the name of the game when I choose buttons or thread for the buttons. Here I chose a faux tortoise shell button, and used a blue thread that matches the fabric, but creates a really eye-catching contrast against the buttons. Its a small detail, but one I quite like!
There are buttons on both the front bodice, and at the shoulder to keep those folded sleeves in place. I appreciate that detail! Sometimes details can seem totally superfluous, but these little button tabs at the shoulders are perfect.
Of course, this dress has pockets! Every dress needs pockets, regardless of the occasion! A girl’s got to have her essentials handy. I add pockets to almost every dress or skirt I make if the pattern doesn’t already include them, but thankfully, the Fringe has pockets already.
Let’s talk about this fabric, shall we? Have you sewn with Liberty lawn yet? If you haven’t, I can tell you with one hundred percent certainty that you ought to try it and that you will love it the moment you have done so! That is what Liberty does to people. Their signature tana lawn is a very finely woven, lightweight cotton that is often compared to silk. It is the very highest quality, and is quite strong despite the lightness of it. Additionally, it doesn’t shrink so I don’t ever prewash it, though it handles washes quite well. I have used it for nearly a decade, and it is my perennial favorite fabric.
As I said, this print is rather a rare one, and Minerva is the first place I’ve seen it. Liberty is known for their enormous range of mostly small scale florals, though they do sometimes print some large scale as well, and those are quite striking. Their fabrics are often very bright or light, so again, this print is quite different and interesting. I’m glad I have had the privilege of sewing with it!
