I'm so excited to share my latest Minerva make with my favorite fabric- Liberty Tana Lawn! I have been using Tana Lawn for the better part of ten years and it is my go to for garment making. If you haven't ever worked with Liberty's signature fabric, I'm going to do my best to convince you that its now time!
Liberty's primary base is tana lawn, which is a very fine cotton that has often been described as silk-like. It is a woven cotton with a very fine and dense weave which makes it both luxurious and incredibly practical for everyday wear. It can be washed with any other laundry, though I recommend only putting anything in the washer if its soiled or stinks because all garments will last longer if they don't go through the wash on the regular.
Back to the fabric! Liberty of London is known for their signature small scale florals just as much as they are known for the quality of their fabrics. Their prints, whether light and dainty or bold and saturated, are incredibly crisp and perfectly consistent. You know exactly what you are getting with Liberty, which makes it both worth the cost, and an easy decision when thinking about what fabrics to buy.
This dress is made with a classic print called Edenham and features mustard, light blue, and pink flowers with bright red leaves on a navy background. It is very bold and dramatic in color and I love it!
I have made a Wilder gown from Friday Pattern Company with this fabric. I made the pattern as it is written except that I used 50% more width in the bottom tier of the skirt. I also added some elastic around the waistline to nip it in, though this falls right under the bust as opposed to the natural waist. I will definitely lengthen the bodice next time since a cut closer to the natural waist suits me better and is my preference. I think the pattern and fabric make a lovely pair. The full length silhouette feels especially luxurious with the Liberty lawn.
I used another favorite Liberty lawn for the tie of this dress, Capel in mustard, and I think it's the perfect POP at the neckline. I really love that the Wilder Gown looks so polished and sort of vintage with the tie in a bow, but left undone, it has more of a relaxed, Bohemian feel. I will definitely add pockets to my next Wilder gown. While I've made the top version before, this is my first time ever making the full length gown, and when I make a pattern for the first time, I like to sew it as it is designed so I can get a good feel for the fit and how it wears so I can make modifications if needed the next time. So not only will the next one have a longer waistline for my long torso, it will also have pockets.
I definitely would recommend both the fabric and the pattern used here, which again is Liberty London's Edenham Tana Lawn, and Friday Pattern Company's Wilder Gown which is a really great pattern that can easily be sewn up in an afternoon.
