I love this blouse so very much. I can’t even begin to explain how many more of these I’ve now got planned!
This was so almost my last
#MinervaBrandAmbassador project of 2021 but owing to the midwinter mood of “weather cold and dark, no motivation to do anything at all” it didn’t quite happen before Christmas! I had all the pieces cut by mid-December but with work gearing up for the holidays, all the family festive cooking and baking, and just generally not being very well (not the you-know-what, only a seasonal bug) those pieces sat being ignored for about three weeks. Sorry fabric! You deserve better, you’re too cute to be left to one side!
So, it’s my very first Minerva Make of 2022 and I couldn’t be happier with it. Hopefully it sets the tone for the new year and new makes to come! It’s a long sleeved version of the Patina Blouse by Friday Pattern Company.
When the fabric options came out for this round I fell in love with this space print cotton poplin. It’s 100% woven cotton and has a lovely handle. I hear so many people on sewing social media talking about how they prefer knits and are almost afraid of wovens but to me that’s backwards! Woven fabrics don’t run away from you, they can be pressed to within an inch of their life where needed and they hold perfect crisp points for collars and such. Obviously that’s not always the case with poly blends and such but when you’re using natural fibres, they’re fabulous. Knits are far more challenging, in my experience!
Anyway, this space print! I thought it was just too too cute without being childish or overly young for me to want to actually put on. Although I fully embrace the idea that everyone should wear whatever they want to, I know for myself that if it’s too out-there I just won’t choose it when I open the wardrobe. I love the navy background and the little flashes of lighter shades in amongst the moons and stars. The planets bring me joy too - I particularly like the little green ones but I appreciate the variety because then I can wear all sorts of accessories. I chose buttons I thought complemented this space effect - they’re marbled but with a tiny little metallic border too. They look like planets themselves, I think. I posted a photo of them previously as well.
The pattern came together so wonderfully but I have made shirts before so it wasn’t something I was too daunted by. I find the FPC instructions to be very clear and I also love their motivational messages - if you’ve ever made something from them, you’ll know what I mean! What I love most is the new-to-me continuous bound placket method for the cuff openings. You should have heard me when I finished the first one and it looked so beautiful. I made an out loud ‘oh my gosh’ exclamation and my husband stuck his head around the door to see what was going on. They’re so neat and so very much easier than the alternative methods I’ve previously used?! I’ll never do a different method again. I’m also wondering about using it on a neckline where I want a little jewel button at the back of the neck, for instance.
On the FPC website they also have options for alternative neckline depths but I personally think this one is perfect. One of their models has a white striped blouse and I covet it so that really might have to be next and I’m about to scour Minerva for the perfect tonal-textured fabric. I don’t think I’m going to have as much sewing time in 2022 owing to starting a new full time job, but if I make myself things I can wear to the office then I can justify the projects, right? That’s what I’m telling myself! (Do we think I can wear this to my new job? I guess there’s only one way to find out..)
I hope you like this one as much as I do and if you need a blouse, I heartily recommend the Patina pattern. The sleeves are full but not oversized-poufy, the gathering at the back is sufficient for movement but not too dramatic, and the collar is such a nice proportion. The length is really nice for me for seated as well, though I may add 2” in future just for personal
preference.In summary: I’m a big fan!
